Hi all I have a decision to make about my job and need advice my options are below. Any additional questions I may add info to here. There was stuff I thought about adding but didn't want to make it to long.

Option 1
Offered Voluntary severance around 50% of wage tax free.
Has to be applied for in two weeks

Option 2
Wait until end of March job roles announced and you will then know if your job exists/what can be applied for.
Earliest they can force redundancy is end of July
Redundancy would be poor as not been here that long (few years)

Decision is complicated further by below.

I am seconded to my current job until end of Feb, I likely won’t get an admin job (round here anyway) on that wage easy if it all. I think the wage is 18k-21k.

My permanent job is reception admin which is more replaceable at around 15k.
I will be able to apply for the seconded higher grade jobs come march.

Health implications ,I need a operation (non-urgent) ideally this year and would be off for around a month.

Gut reaction was to take the money and run, but it’s not that simple, I am going to get an exact figure for severance whilst looking for jobs, though I won’t find anything in two weeks I doubt.

by 50% wage, do you mean 50% of a year's salary?

If your operation will make it difficult to get another job, then I would give serious thought to giving up your current one. At the end of the day you will 'only' be losing out on the tax free bit of 6 months wage by staying and the being made redundant.

Yes sorry, 50% of a years salary.

once operations done I will be ok, just its a longish recovery time. I doubt it will help when looking for a job to be like, well i may need a month off at some point....

ahahah Lions ! what a typo fail.

I typed the rest on pc and the first sentance on my phone. This is why I don't post on forums from phone normally. I wish I had Lions (not below though!)

Those options I'd take the severance pay and get looking for a new job. Bit of luck you could end up quids in if you can land a new position sharpish.

That's what I was thinking - it virtually makes the time between redundancy and op recovery dead time since there is no point in even looking for a position 'cos it's more than likely that nobody will take you on.

Take the money:you get ~ 7-8months net salary (ball park)?

wait it out: salary up until July (plus notice period?) plus ~3 weeks redundancy - hardly any difference to above, but at least you have a chance of keeping you job whilst ill which is pretty handy. Especially considering getting a new similar admin job is probably quite difficult with lots of competition atm.

Some good points, also from others in thread.

All thoughts are appreciated never been in this position, in the past i have had temp contracts and bailed before they ran out.

Might be getting another week to apply for severance and that extension runs into the first review period may get more info. It seems even if you apply for the severance and they send it, its not accepted until you sign. Think my plan is now to wait for quote do some sums and speak to hospital ie waiting list time. Will look for some jobs at weekend too! leaning toward waiting it out now.

Hi all,

Just an update to this for everyone. I had a week left to decide, started applying for jobs and said if I got one interview before I had to make a final decision i would leave.

Got two interviews, final day was 28th of Feb and I got offered a job that day, just a reception job 12 month temp.

Took a while to start that due to Dwp reference, did that job for 3 months then moved onto another permanent job in same company (higher grade)

Been doing a data manager role since August. People have moved around in my old job, but nothing is secure. it is likely if I stayed I would have been doing 2 jobs.

I have learned something valuable in that I enjoy change in a job, something i thought I disliked.

So glad I left as all the uncertainty was affecting my health!
Thanks for the support!
