I'm looking to add some L3 functionality to my home/lab network. I'm currently using a Netgear GS724T and an older FS726T, both configured with various VLANs and LAGs. I've been trying to use a virtualised pfSense router to handle the inter-VLAN routing and DHCP relay, but it's just not working as it should and puts too large a dependency on pfSense for my liking (i.e. ending up locked out of half the network when pfSense isn't up!).
So ideally I want to replace one of my switches with an equivalent switch with L3 routing and DHCP relay/IP helper functions. Here's what I've found so far:
My budget is up to around £200. The Cisco is probably my best option unless someone can explain to me how the DHCP side of things would work with the D-Link! Have I missed any alternatives? I'm not really a networks guy so I'm very open to input on this
Cheers!
So ideally I want to replace one of my switches with an equivalent switch with L3 routing and DHCP relay/IP helper functions. Here's what I've found so far:
- D-Link DGS-1500-28 - http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/business-solutions/switching/smart-switches/smartpro/dgs-1500-series-gigabit-smartpro-switches - wouldn't normally look at D-Link kit but at under £200 this is interesting. It'll do static routes and multiple IP interfaces but there is apparently no DHCP relay/IP helper functionality. I've been through the manual several times but it's just not there. How do they expect people to handle DHCP, with a server in each VLAN?? I'm probably missing something obvious! Otherwise this is perfect and could replace my older switch.
- Netgear M4100-D12G - http://www.netgear.co.uk/business/products/switches/fully-managed-switches/intelligent-edge/M4100.aspx - this does everything I need and being Netgear should play happily with my existing switches. But being only 12 ports I'd have to run it in addition to the existing switches and LAG some ports across. The biggest problem, in fact it's practically a show stopper, is that it doesn't have rack mount ears.
- Cisco SG300-10 - http://www.cisco.com/cisco/web/solutions/small_business/products/routers_switches/300_series_switches/index.html - this is even better than the Netgear in terms of features and performance and comes with rack mount ears, but only has 10 ports. That would be enough but again, means I have to run it in addition to the existing switches. There's also a question mark in my mind about compatibility with Netgear stuff for LAGs and VLANs.
