Really depends what you want. The 15.4's won't be very portable.

Core Duo and Core 2 Duo are very different, Core 2 being quite a lot better.

As ever, depends what you plan to use it for. For me, browsing and a little coding - didn't need the Core 2 Duo based machines for mine... so I went Samsung

I have the R20.... can't fault it. Would really recommend you bump memory to 2GB for Vista.

well im not going to use it on the train or anything like that just to be used at home, video encoding & burning etc
i was thinking of going for one with 2 gig of ram and at least 120 gig hd and so on but want a dual core machine what are the santa rosa machines like? any good?

cheers

So what exactly is the difference, I though the only difference was the bus and cache???

How I understood it was like this for the Intel Mobile Dual Cores, im probably wrong though

Centrino Duo Family (New Tech)

Core Duo - 533bus 2mb Cache
Core 2 Duo - 667bus and 4mb Cache

Pentium Family (Older Dothan Tech)

Pentium Dual Core - 400-533bus and 1-2mb Cache

Now I have wrote that, im not so sure anymore, anyone confirm either way???

Hmm actually I'm not sure either, I seem to remember having it explained to me recently.

I take my post back :p :o

well i thought the same

Core Duo - 533bus 2mb Cache
Core 2 Duo - 667bus and 4mb Cache
santa rosa Intel Core 2 Duo 800MHz FSB, 2MB L2 Cache

this is confusing

I'd certainly go for something with a T5xxx or T7xxx CPU rather than T2xxx. I don't know if the difference is as great as between C2D and Pentium D but it won't hurt to think of it in the same way. I bought an Aspire 5633 which has a T5500 and 15.4" screen. It came with 1GB RAM and 120GB HDD but now has 2GB & 160GB. :D
In fact, I'm 90 miles from home and typing this on the 5633.

Get the R70. Looks the better build quality and much better specs. It's a newer laptop aswell! :) From that lot, it's the wisest choice.

The Santa Rosa are newer and the T7100 is better than the other ones you have listed. How it compares with the T7200 - I'm not too sure. I believe the T7200 still edges over it. Have you checked out the Samsung Q70 by the way? Small machine but pretty impressive specs.

dont know much about the samsungs but the acers are very nice units, well put together compared to some of todays junk, some of the philips units are nice too not sure on prices, dont go for any cheapy toshibas they're not too hot on build quality or spec either, steer clear of T2xxx cpus bit pants to be fair.

hmm those samsung units look nice Q70 very nice thanks for the pointers lads much appreciated :)
either gonna be

Acer Aspire 5633WLMi or Samsung R70 but somthing with a T5xxx i'll let you know what i get

cheers
