Hi.

We are looking to purchase a laptop for work, primary use is for password cracking.

Looking for some advice here is any is going please! :)

Basically I am favouring this machine here given that it's new tech:

But really, I'm not sure what would be best here. IE is Intel CPU better for this purpose than Ryzen and should I be looking for Nvidia rather than that 580...?

Any info appreciated.

Cheers.

Assuming you're using something that supports GPU cracking (such as Hashcat), ideally you want multiple GPUs, preferably fast ones, and they may need to be running for a long time so cooling becomes a priority. A laptop really is the wrong form factor for multiple GPUs running flat out for long periods of time. Does it NEED to be a laptop, or could you potentially use a cheap laptop out in the field that you then RDP into a dedicated box back at base that's running a few 1080ti's or VEGA cards in (depending on which card is faster at your preferred tool(s)) to do the actual number crunching?

Yes...

Again as I understand it these processes are reliant primarily on the GPU :)

If I have that wrong apologies!
Hi this is a nosey (& possibly dumb) question so feel free to ignore:) Why would someone want to crack passwords is it for people who've locked themselves out of their account?

Documents are the core of my company, some of which get password protected some of which get forgotten or the person leaves etc. Hence we have machines with password cracking software on them to get into these when needed. It's a perfectly normal requirement, as far as I am aware though we don't have any special machines for it, just standard Dell's that everyone uses.

Cant be for documents, its faster to just hack them manually. .doc's can be easily cracked with a hex editor and you can rename .docx, .xlsx to .zip and use some methods to get around passwords there with relative ease.
