I'd like to play some of my older games on them (Half Life 2, FEAR, Tomb Raider, etc) as well as viewing high def videos (720p and upwards). Prices are pretty similar but the main differences seem to be CPU, GPU and memory related.

Option 1: Acer Aspire 7736G - £540

# Screen size - 17.3 inches - 1600 x 900
# Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 - 2.13 GHz
# RAM - 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667mhz
# Hard Drive - 320 GB Sata 5400rpm
# Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
# Optical Drive - DVD±RW (±R DL) / DVD-RAM
# Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce G210M
# Wireless technology - 802.11 a/b/g/n
# HDMI out - usb x 4 - HD Audio - integrated webcam

Option 2: Samsung R730-JB02UK - £554

* Screen size - 17.3 in - 1600 x 900
* Processor - Intel Core i3 I3-330M - 2.13 GHz
* RAM - 3 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1066 MHz
* Hard Drive - 500 GB Sata 7200 rpm
* Operating System - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
* Optical Drive - DVD±RW (+R double layer) / DVD-RAM
* Graphics - Intel HD Graphics GMA 4500M
* Wireless technology - 802.11 b/g/n
* HDMI out - usb x 4 - HD Audio - integrated webcam

4500 is basically just a more advanced version of integrated graphics chip and thus isn't suited for gaming, however, at the same time while 210m is better on the Acer it's not a beast either. I see from both your options that your budget is around £550 and you'd like a big 17" screen. You can have a hunt around Dell Outlet as I've seen some nicely specced Studio 17s on there around the budget that you've got.

Thanks. Thing is though, I'm not exactly after a beast. I'll stick some slightly older games on it but certainly nothing like Crysis or GTA4. I've looked up a few benchmarks for the Acer's nVidia GPU and stuff like Half Life 2/Doom 3 averages over 100fps on max settings.

As for Dell, I'm in Ireland and their prices are horrific over here. Decent stuff starts at about €850 (£700!)

the acer looks quite decent on the GPU front

the GT210 is only about a 9400 through if I remember?

Haven't a clue tbh. I've never used nVidia hardware.

More opinions would be appreciated folks. Five hundred odd quid doesn't come too easily these days :)
