I need a laptop for my OU course. I tried doing a lot of the reading, typing and note taking in my ipad, but that has been a total non starter really.

Basically it's to be used for word processing, programming, Internet, watching videos and very light gaming. I don't think games like sim city are particularly demanding. I have a powerful desktop for anything heavy duty.

Most important, is screen size and weight. It has to have a minimum of a 15 inch screen and I want it really thin and light. Almost ultrabook thickness and weight. I don't really have a set budget, just as cheap as possible. I'm not overly bothered about a touch screen.

Thanks for your help :)

Well, i buy Dell Latitude E7440 laptops, but they are 14".
They are very light as they also don't have optical drives, but come with SSD.
When you want a minimum of 15" screen, but then say you want it really light and thin, there's gonna be a trade-off mate.
The 2 main ways they make laptops lighter are to rip out the optical drive and replace the mechanical or even full size SSD for a mSSD (looks like a stick of ram).
It would be best to set yourself a budget first then see what fits the bill so to speak.
I have an array of Dell laptops, mostly latitudes; E5440, E7440, E6430, E5520. They're all different and only the E7440 comes close to being classed as an 'ultrabook' (which it is).

I was thinking about £500.

I said almost ultrabook as I realise I'm not going to get a 1kg laptop with a 15 inch screen. Weight wise, I would be willing to accept around the 5lb mark. I was actually looking at i7 Inspiron 5000 series. If you don't mind, can you have a look and tell me what you think it's like for the money please? :)
