I can't see a fan grill on the Apple one's, but are there any Windows laptops that are very quiet like, I assume, the Apple ones?

I assume the Apple laptop has a fan of some sort, much like their Mini.

Preferably below the price point of the Apple.

My toshiba portégé is almost silent, infact its the only thing switched on in my room right now and all I can hear is the HDD click a few times whilst I access different things.

Its also really small and light, with awesome battery life to boot :D

I would say its more to do with the type of processor.

The lower the heat output, the quieter it should be.

We've got a Centrino Gateway and a HP Core2Duo. When I got the gateway I thought it was almost silent, until I got the C2D setup which is amazingly quiet.

That is true, the Pentium-M in my portégé is one of the ULV (ultra low voltage) range of chips, which comes in at a staggering 0.8v core.

Its both quiet and cool running

Any that are low voltage parts.

Basically the more portable a laptop, generally speaking, the lighter it has to be. This means a smaller amount of cooling and as such more often than not, the use of a ULV or LV processor.

AFAIK the Pentium-M and Core/Core2 processors all have LV and ULV counterparts. They should all be silent running.

My Dell 630m is never loud unless it starts to really heat up. Even with the fan forced on low speed (which is how I usually run it when it's plugged in), it makes very little noise.

My Dell inspiron 9400 is not loud until you put a disc in the drive , then it sound like concorde taking off

apart from that , very happy :) :)
