Dad is after a new diesel estate

15k maximum, so I was thinking the mondeo ST TDCI, unless anyone has better suggestions?

Mondy or pug 406. If i had the money i'd go for the Mondeo (biggest load space in it's class), or for something stupidly quick, get the pug.

We've got a Mondeo Titanium 2.2TDCI and I have to say I really like it. Refined (for a diesel), quickish and a good size load space. Plus nice toys like climate control, MP3/raido headunit and cruise control - no speed limiter though....

That'll be the ZT-T TD :D

I loved the one I test drove a few years ago.

I think it depends on the cash you have to spend, I suspect a mondy estate with the new common rail oir burner would be hard to beat.

Octavia 2.0TDI Ambiente/Elegance/Sport Estate would be a good choice.

I am unsure whether the vRS TDI estate is even out yet.

A audi A4 Avant (dear god they hate their estates being called estates as my dad found out) would also be a good option although compared to say the skoda or a ford it will be older and have higher mileage.

If you want something bigger there is the passat/Audi A6 avants to look at as well.

However in he budget the skoda and the mondeo probably offer the best VFM.

AFAIK the Mondeo offers the largest boot space in it's class.

I have a Mk2 Mondeo estate and it's fantastic. It is very large inside.

The Mk3 ST TDCi would be an excellent work horse and it also looks fantastic, combined with the generous interior spec too I really don't believe you will beat it pound for pound.

The TDCi engine range are very well refined, excellent economy, power delivery and really nothing like a typical diesel.

I havn't actually driven a TDCi or even Mk3 Mondeo for that matter but have looked over a few.

I am currently considering opting for a Mk3 Ghia X Estate- I just cannot fault my current Mk2 so it makes justifying the couple of £k extra a bit difficult when they can be ploughed into saving for something for the weekend.

Definately pop over to Ford and get a test drive in the St TDCi though!

Oh, what sort of mileage you expecting to do? A ST220 estate may work out little or no more to run.

I already own a mondeo TDCI Ghia X so driving an st tdci is pointless :p

16k, so ST220 isnt reallly a good choice.

Get an MG ZT-T TD then. With it's fairly tuneable BMW Diesel engine! :)

In British Racing Green. :)
Nope :p
MG is a no go tbh, I am 99% sure my dad wouldnt want to shell out 15k or whatever on a rover.

For a very refined, quiet, comfortable motorway crusier get the Rover 75 CDTi Tourer. Something like the Connoisseur or Connoisseur SE

If you want a fine handling sports estate get the MG ZT-T 135+

These two cars have quite different characters. The MG has less sound proofing, no wood, far stiffer suspension, different gear box, etc, etc.

In my experience, the A4 is too small to be called a large estate, esp compared to the Ford.

A6 is large, and can be had for pretty reasonable money, any limit on age mileage? The A6 quattro diesel 180bhp estates can be had for decent money and have good longevity if serviced properly.

Two things:

a) 406 good load lugger. If your budget is £1500. His is £15000. Thats fifteen THOUSAND.

b) Stupidly quick? 406 Estate? Earth to SB118...

They are different cars, to appreciate the ST you must drive it. It would be my choice if I wasn't allowed to pick an E39 530d Sport Touring instead.

No, your 406 1.9TD was not quick at all, merely acceptable. Same engine and gearbox as my Xantia, same floorpan, but more weight. Not quick, just acceptable.
