Thinking about getting a last gen console. I don't want to spend much. Is it a ps4 or some sort of x box I should be looking at.

Thanks

Simple but vital question, which games do you want to play? PS4 had more in the way of exclusives, but for cross platform Xbox One X generally outclassed the PS4 pro in terms of performance from what I gather.

Do you have a PC or modern console?

PS4 Pro is a reasonable console for last gen. It is also capable of supporting the V1 of PS VR if you ever wanted to dabble with that later down the line.

The Xbox one x is also worth considering.

Both consoles are relatively even in performance and so the main question will be which ecosystem you prefer.

Sony has good exclusives, Microsoft is probably a bit better in terms of online services.

There’s a thread here regarding couch co-op games which you may find useful:

Switch

Chucking it out there as it's technically a 8th gen machine. Will cost more, but with some of the Nintendo games and indies I've played more local co-op games on this than anything else in the last few years (rivals the Wii in that regards).

Still current, v.likely to have backwards compatibility with it's successor in 2025 (assuming the reports today are correct). And really the best complimentary machine to own with a PC. Also not dealing with slow storage like XBO and PS4. And much better compatibility with controllers (8bitdo. Guilikit etc. - stuff you can use on PC too).

But if having to go the MS/Sony route I don't think it would matter too much unless one or other of the first-party libraries is really appealing.

The Series S is available for £22 a month for 2yrs with game pass ultimate, I'd not auto recommend it over something else, but it's worth a look to check if it ticks the boxes. Depends how much you use it and if you have cash now. A Series S second hand and with acquiring game pass cheaply through deals will be much cheaper. Having the solid state drive is a game changer for consoles, the PS4 can use one also, but unsure on performance there. Game pass is the same price for console as it is for PC + console too, so again worth a consideration depending on your usage.

PS4 Slim, stupidly silent, the Pro's are hit and miss with having loud fans so it's a major sods law factor that mid game it'll turn into a jet engine.

I had the latest revision of a PS4 Pro and even then it can still get a little loud.

It’s been untouched for 3/4 years, I really need to get it shifted!

I always wanted one but I heard it's very luck of the draw with the fans, and I have notoriously bad luck so it'd happen to me and not someone else haha, so I settled for a slim and it's been awesome, as has the ps3 slim, having had both phat original jet plane models, they are worlds apart and literally silent in comparison!
I actually fired up the PS4 the other day for some nostalgia and it was very pleasant, it's a shame I hadn't got one sooner as I've done all my games so many times on the phats that the slims barely get used now.

I'd go with the PS4 slim tbh (or Pro). It's just an all around better console. It's more powerful, has vastly better exclusives, and you can try out VR if you like. Xbox has game pass, which is great, but for me it's PlayStation.

My vote has to go toward and Xbox One X or or Series S.

Neither sound like a jet engine unlike the PS4 Pro can do eventually. You can spend an afternoon stripping one down and cleaning it up but most on the second hand market get noisy as in no time.

Longevity wise I'd be looking for a series s on offer.

I was picking my boy up from a play date and they were playing Spiderman (not sure if 1 or 2) on ps4 Pro.

I was mighty impressed with the graphics and the speed tbh.

Seemed to be much better than Xbox one x games I've seen played on the series X.

So based on this and the back catalogue of games available and that up until very recently they still releasing new games on ps4 I would recommend the ps4.

This does pain me as an Xbox fan boy, but got to admit when beaten

If you're going to play online at all it's worth considering what console any friends have. Added benefit as well as co-op would be being able to borrow games from them too.

Personally I have been a Playstation guy typically but do have an Xbox One S as I really wanted to play Forza Horizon 4.

I'd vote for getting a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X as the OG consoles will be getting on a bit and at least you can get some games to play at 4K resolutions with them.
