Which messenger program should I try/use?

Used to be into that ICQ back in the day with mIRC. (10yr ago) then I used MSN messenger (well first Windows Msg) anyway it's been QUITE awhile and I run Windows 8.1 and Android. I know LIVE has changed and I think its stopped and is now Skype? is it?

I am using PIDGEN for MSN with an old (but used up HOTMAIL), I plan on using my GMAIL and carrying good contacts over and same with Facebook. I use FB msg

So is it worth signing into Skype and with offical program?? Is MSN from pidgen anything similer to skype?

I've thunderbird as a PIM but on Outlook and use for FB chat. Also I use Hotmail for old emails that might be imoportant but mostly GMAIL, can I sync with Outlook? Contacts, tasks, etc?

Skype is by far the best IM out there imo.

Depends what other people have who you want to talk too. You can use iChat now to connect to jabber services for example Facebook Messenger.

Skype is probably the most widespread so if your going to make something your main IM contact you may as well go with Skype.

Easy to use and has enough features to keep you happy. Plenty of apps for mobiles and plenty of third party software that supports it.

Steam Friends is actually pretty good if you and your friends tend to have it loaded anyway. Bit harder to get hold of family though

If you are using Windows 8, make sure you get the Desktop Version of Skype, the original version for windows 8 is horrible :-(

Also as hawkhench says, steam is very good.
