Ok, so I'm normally quite capable of both picking a tyre and spouting off over the internet about which one is best.

But I'm just trying to buy 2 half decent midrange tyres in 195/65/15 and have been offered a choice of no less than FIVE different Goodyear tyres - all at exactly the same price. I have no idea how I'm supposed to choose between them, so any experiences/pointers/whatever?

The choices are..

Eagle NCT5 (This tyre is surely older than me? I remember it being fitted to Mk2 Mondeos as a factory tyre!)
Hydragrip (Another quite old one?)
Excellence (A touring tyre?)
EfficientGrip
DuraGrip

This is probably a job for jon- :p

So EfficientGrip and Duragrip both got totally crap test results last year - both 12th in the tests they were found in. Good start :D

I think the right answer seems to be a Continental PremiumContact5 at a tenner each more. Though it appears to top the tests with awesome everything it comes flat bottom for wear. Arn't mid-range tyres supposed to last for ever :p

That's surprising that the wear has scored that bad, are they seen as worse than the PC2's Fox?

I've done 20k miles on my PC2's so far and according to my recent service, am down to 4mm on the rears, 5mm on the fronts

This. I had NCT5s on my Honda and they were terrible. I replaced them with some PremiumContact 3 (I think, or 2..) which were much quieter and grippier

Eagle NCT5 and Hydragrip don't appear on the Goodyear site anymore but according to Goodyear's own performance rankings:

EfficientGrip > DuraGrip > Excellence.

Not to say their not all **** but that's the order of them anyway :P

*EDIT*

Note: Goodyear reckon the Efficientgrip outperforms the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2, so read how you will into how accurate Goodyear's in house testing actually is.

I think we have the Excellence on the people carrier and not and any issuse in all weather conditions . They have covered about 5k and not really even showing any signs of wear yet.

AFAIK Hydragrip and NCT5 are no longer produced.

I had some Hydragips on my old Mondeo Estate about 5 years ago and when I went to get another set they had been discontinued back then. Well, that's what I was told.

I fitted a set of Duragrips to my girlfriends Fiesta. They've been fine and seem fine in the wet too. It's only a little, light car though. It did have a hodge-podge of no-name tyres on before I got a matching set and my girlfriend complained about it locking up in the wet! So the Duragrips are a definite improvement over the bottom stuff.

I think the Efficientgrip have replaced the Duragrip? Goodyears marketing department should really simplify things!
