I'm looking to start a Minecraft server for a bit.

No idea which host to use, it'll be mainly for myself and a few mates, maybe a few of you guys if you want in. Not sure which or how many mods we'll run, but we loved Tekkit back in the day so probably something a bit technical.

Any suggestions?

You could save yourselves the pennies and do it over Hamachi / LogMeIn as a LAN server, and just connect to each other.

if you don't need it going 24/7, then you can host your own, thats what i do with just a few mates, downside is server is only online when i am, upside is its free.

I have no idea how to do this.

I've got a PC running 24/7 already. It's an i3 3220, 4gb, 128gb SSD and a 2tb WD Blue or green or something.

My internet is fairly fast too, just don't know how to do this

the server you can download from mojang [for vanilla] or the ftb launcher gives you links to a server if there is one for a given modpack [not sure about tekkit, but iirc you can get them from the site].

the minecraft wiki has a good guide to setting it up, and modded servers for a mainstream modpack work pretty much the same as vanilla.

really the only headache is the firewall exceptions and your ip changing [unless your isp gives you a static ip] so you have to keep googling it to let folk know where to connect
