Hello people,

Anyone know of the capabilities of these mini media players you see on the bay and such.

Looking at this as an example:

Edit: Also been looking at the Sumvision Cyclone Micro 3 which was reviewed on TrustedReviews, seems to get good reviews, anyone got that?

Looking for first hand experience, any particular model numbers and such? I do remember a guy who bought one and posted it in a GD thread but never asked how it was.

Would you run into problems if you used a memory stick with a 720p mkv on it, transfer speeds and whatnot, or best used with an external hdd.

Thanks for any advice/info!

:)

I bought a Cyclone Micro 3 for my mum a few weeks ago and it's a great little player. I was able to play a 26gb mkv (on a 32gb USB stick) with no problems at all. Likewise, there was no problems playing back an 11gb mkv from an NTFS formatted 16gb SDHC card.

I went for the one with 8gb of internal storage space which comes in useful for storing a fair few older movies or episodes in AVI format.

The remote for the Micro 3 is pretty naff but it's useable. The player would be better controlled with one of the Logitech Harmony series of remotes ... or something similar.

Thanks for that Mutt, I'm going to get one and try, the 8GB onboard will be useful. Personally for me I want it to be able to handle 720p mkv movies, but I know that if my sister wants one all she'll have is avi's and whatnot.

:)

I had a Sumvision Cyclone MKV Primus, which is basically a larger version of the Micro with the ability to add in a hard drive.

I returned it because the picture quality was very poor. Everything was very dark in comparison to running off, say, an Xbox 360 or PS3. Could have just been the model I got, but it was bothersome.

If you have to buy a USB Flash drive or SDHC card to go along with the Cyclone Micro 3 I'd definitely spend the extra £20 or so to get the WDTV. It all depends on whether you need the ability to be able to stream over your network.

I have run a Patriot Box Office for 20 months. Great media player. Never had a problem playing anything... avi, mkv, flv, etc. I flashed it with some fancy firmware which has been very stable. Takes an internal 2.5 hdd or external via usb. Streaming is not great with a wifi dongle, but excellent using the ethernet 100mbps port. Once I finished faffing about with different firmware (to see which one I liked best) and settled on the current one it has been great. It just works.. 1080p works fine on a usb stick. There is great forum support too via the patriot site.

How much does the unit cost please.?

Well I got my Sumvision Cyclone Micro 3 today, pretty impressed. You get a USB Power Socket with a usb to 5v pin cable. A mini USB to female USB for connecting memory sticks and external hard drives, a normal USB to Mini USB for actually connecting the unit to your computer to manage the 8GB onboard storage. Not sure why they didn't just put the mini-usb socket at the rear and have a full usb socket on the front, but for me since I've ordered a 32GB SD card I don't think I'll be using the port, but have also ordered a 64GB USB stick to try it.

The menu os is simple but easy to navigate, has options for internal memory and external storage (SD card slot / USB), the internal hdd comes up as a drive with a list of the avi's / mkv's I loaded, the 720p mkv played well, looked good but I only tested it on my crappy TV, loaded the included subtitles as well. Skipping forward works well at different speeds (2/4/16/32 etc), but other than that it does exactly what it says on the box, not fancy or anything but does the job!

As I said I ordered a 32GB SD Card & another HDMI cable so I can properly test it on the living room TV later next week but it looks like its just what I wanted, going to be extremely useful, pretty sure my sister will want one as well. :)

Good choice mate.

I could see no real difference between the picture quality of the Micro 3 and the WD TV Live SMP on my Samsung LED. You'll be pretty impressed when you eventually hook it up to a decent TV.

The white looks so much better than the black IMHO. The characters/words on the black remote are blue and so, difficult to read in anything other than daylight.
