Any mmogs worth trying atm? I'm interested in these ones below but are there any open betas doing the rounds of things like Huxley? Or anything that looks spectacular on the horizon?

Eve - revelations

Vanguard

Auto Assault (i think its called this like Mad max but MMO)

p.s. i dont like WoW :)

Not played Eve or Vanguard, but steer (hah, geddit'?) well clear of Auto Assault. I was in the beta and it was just...dull and entirely pointless.

There is actually no point in it being an MMO, half the time you're on you're own anyway and even when you're in a group there's no team work to speak of.

It's a shame because i was really looking forward to it, it's a great idea just really poorly executed.

:(

Eve is excellent - very steep learning curve, but once you get over it there's absolutely tons of stuff to do. You do need to be in a good corp (player guild) though, or it's quite boring.

Vanguard looks like it's going to be brilliant. Played the beta right up to when it closed, and while I initially thought it was bugged beyond repair, by the time the beta closed it was starting to look really polished and optimised. They have a lot of cool ideas and there's a lot of depth there. Looks like one of the few games that's going to allow you a bit of freedom.

I have just re-started Everquest 2 again after a year and a half break. I agree mostly with what you have said about MMO's. The concept is something I have always wanted to love. There is the inner geek in me who loves all that stat stuff which gives me something to do at work - planning my next build.

Yeah, they can be very frustrating but there are those rare occasions when you are in a group where everyone gels and it just goes right - it can be the most awesome gaming experience. The reality is that most of your time is spent waiting for other players only for them to arrive to be completely useless or rude.

To the original poster, avoid Vanguard for the first six months as it will take a while for the problems to be sorted out. I don't know if you have tried WOW which is the most popular but I personally would go for where there is the most mature and helpful community. A game is only as good as its players and EQ2 has a better community than WOW.

The MMO I am most looking forward to is Conan because it will have proper player controlled combat and not the usual click the attack button and sit back and wait - it will be proper real-time combat. It will also be a normal single player game till level 20 which means the combat has to pretty good to translate into a single player experience.

What is the game world like - environment design, artwork and graphics.

this one is a little old now, but Linage 2

i played this game for many many years and loved it :D

although, i dont know what its like now, and also back in the day when i was playing it (original players, the first lot of us out from beta) we had very nice people and we would party for 10 hours straight and still have smiles on our faces.

Pushing nearly 3 years old but graphical still puts other mmo's to shame. I still cant run everything at max detail, but it is a gorgeuos game.
a lot has changed over the years, its hundreds of times better than it was in Beta, you just cant compare it.
All the updates are FREE, unlike some games, .......WoW

It's something I could rattle on about for hours, but I wont :)
If anyone fancy's a try, there is a 7 day trial you can grab, and it's a lot more "noob" friendly than it was back in Prelude/C1, and a hell of a lot more fun than WoW. Although sometimes not for the faint hearted.

There are three starting continents in Vanguard, each with a different theme - traditional medieval fantasy setting, oriental, and a desert continent. The nice thing about it is there are no hidden walls. If you can see somewhere, you can get there (although you might have to fly). It looks a lot like EQ2, but a bit less cutesy. It was only on the final day of the beta that I was able to ramp up the hdr and bloom and get a feel for what it's really going to look like. Have a look at some of the screenshots here :

As to the poster who advised avoiding it for 6 months, 2 weeks before the beta ended I would have agreed. It improved massively through before they closed it, really looking forward to it now.

I'd suggest Vanguard also, played the beta for a week and the game looks very very promising.

It still runs a bit dodgy on my PC, but its not unplayable and they seem to be fixing stuff quickly.

Any idea what the subs will be for Vanguard? Couldn't find it ealier in week when I looked.

This is the answer on the website FAQ:

- 1.5.2 Will there be a monthly fee to pay to play?

Most likely, yes.

yeah might have a go on Vanguard when its released on the 30th Jan (is that euro servers as well?)

The latest EQ2 interests me somewhat as well.

Played Eve before ages ago for a little bit thought it was most impressive but itd prolly steal years of my life away from me :p

downloading this 9dragons game as well ill see what thats all about: martial arts mmo combat looks cool :)

Mine wasn't really a comment about MMO's as a whole, just Auto Assault, it really might as well be a single player game. I played City of Heroes for nearly two years and loved it.

:D

If you don't mind a Korean style uber-grind then Lineage II is pretty good. I tried the official server and quit as the grind was just too much of a time sink for me, but after playing on a private server with 40x XP rates I'd say the later stages of the game are worth the grind :)

Having played Vanguard beta, it was trying too hard to be EQ1. So hard, in fact, that the concept of queuing up to kill bosses for drops and yelling in OOC that you had a camp were both still there....

I'm loving Eve at the moment... Reminds me massively of a lot of my favourite games of old- Elite, Tai Pan, Mechwarrior 2 Mercs, and Homeworld (though the latter not in gameplay terms). There's a 14 day free trial on too. Be prepared to feel very frustrated from time to time in the first few days though. The steep learning curve does help keep the knobbers out, on the other hand. (Rookie help is quite funny: "How I fly ship?" "I shot other ship and he blew me up, how?"... The answer to 9/10 of all questions is "Do the tutorial, monkeyman")
