Hi all,

Now my girlfriend is shortly starting a new job involving shifts which means I'll have some evenings free to myself. I'm considering getting into an MMO. For a bit of background I started with Ultima Online and have tried just about everything since, but never settled with one that lived up to UO. I've tried them all, but none in the last year or two.

Anyway, I'm considering starting either WoW (with the triple XP playing with a friend) Lotro (also with a friend) both of which I've tried, but never pulled me in...or waiting for Champions Online which I have on preorder and have had a dabble with in closed beta.

Your thoughts?

Tried Eve, several times. Always start with the best of intentions but it just isn't for me

Aion is totally different to Final Fantasy, Champions online - not sure I can go in to it due to the ND

I don't mean it is like Final Fantasy, just the Asian art-style doesn't appeal to me. I'm in the Champions online closed beta but from what i've played so far is a bit like City of Heroes 1.5

I've played..

Ultima Online
Everquest
Everquest 2
Neocron
Merdian 59
Star Wars Galaxies
Vanguard
Warhammer Online
Guild Wars
Guild Wars nightfall
The Matrix Online
Planetside
City of Heroes
City of Villains
Eve-Online
Lord of the Rings Online
World of Warcraft

I'm sure there will be more I remember.. Always went back to UO!

You've never played Ryzom by the look of it. I think it's still going, has a nice skill system not unlike UO's. Crafting is fantastic too.

Probably looks a bit pants by now though. Also, no Anarchy Online? Tsk tsk :p

Ah yes!

Anarchy Online
Asherons Call 1 and 2! knew I'd miss some :p

Darkfall looks ok. Really put off by having to fork out £42 quid just to see if I like it or not though. What on earth are they thinking?!

Given that he rates UO so highly (and lets face it, who can blame him..its easily the best MMO I have ever played...absolutely a stellar galaxy above and beyond any of the so-called modern MMOs in its prime), he might not find WoW to be the best. He might well find WoW very light on features, extremely restrictive and lacking an edge.

Given his clear preference for an open MMO like UO, I'm guessing that Darkfall or Mortal Online will be more to his liking.

Fair points! Although I should don my flame-proof suit and make it clear I started playing UO with the introduction of Trammel :p

Darkfall does look good, it's just the massive gamble of 40 quid on what has mostly had dire reviews and I don't know anyone IRL that plays it.

My friend is convinced he'll get me into WoW and the triple XP is swinging it. Champions online is only on the radar as I loved City of Heroes and it's more of the same...

Blasphemy !!! :)

No worries, I wont flame you, I only feel sorry that you never got to experience UO at its finest (pre-trammel , pub 16). At least you got the chance to experience UO somewhat, I only wish that more gamers had gotten the chance to experience UO properly. If only they had then maybe MMOs might have taken a whole different path than the way they have ended up.

I quite agree, although I did experience pre-pub 16!

All this talk is making me misty-eyed! :p

It's between WoW, Darkfall and Champions Online now... With a swing towards WoW as I have a friend playing it. Darkfall appeals because it's freeform and Champions, because, well, I like flying around! :p
