You've never played Ryzom by the look of it. I think it's still going, has a nice skill system not unlike UO's. Crafting is fantastic too.
Probably looks a bit pants by now though. Also, no Anarchy Online? Tsk tsk

It's not the fact they wanted to start it at that price, it's the weak pound against the euro. Most EU countries that use the euro it's the average charge for a game.
Thing is you can spend £30 on a new MMO, play it for a month and not like it. Like with AoC and War I was the same with, I just buy MMO's that have something new to bring now.
AoC is ok now apparently but at the beginning it was too much of a grind, War is just a clone of WoW in many aspects though it has PvE replaced by PvP.
Tbh the only full loot MMO's you're going to get now is Darkfall Online and Eve, Mortal Online is in paid alpha at the moment and really is only going to be for the die hard fans who dont mind submitting bug reports.
Given that he rates UO so highly (and lets face it, who can blame him..its easily the best MMO I have ever played...absolutely a stellar galaxy above and beyond any of the so-called modern MMOs in its prime), he might not find WoW to be the best. He might well find WoW very light on features, extremely restrictive and lacking an edge.
Given his clear preference for an open MMO like UO, I'm guessing that Darkfall or Mortal Online will be more to his liking.
I haven't played it yet missed the beta, but friends from my guild say they are enjoying it.

Darkfall does look good, it's just the massive gamble of 40 quid on what has mostly had dire reviews and I don't know anyone IRL that plays it.
My friend is convinced he'll get me into WoW and the triple XP is swinging it. Champions online is only on the radar as I loved City of Heroes and it's more of the same...

No worries, I wont flame you, I only feel sorry that you never got to experience UO at its finest (pre-trammel , pub 16). At least you got the chance to experience UO somewhat, I only wish that more gamers had gotten the chance to experience UO properly. If only they had then maybe MMOs might have taken a whole different path than the way they have ended up.

The only Dire review it's had was from eurogamer.

there are more if you do a little search. The reviews that are coming now are very well reviewed, averaging about 5-6/10, which is about correct. The game does need a lot of polish and changes, but you can still have a lot of fun.

Well the same could be said of UO in its prime, yet it was still the best MMO I ever had the luck to play.
I must admit that I dont pay much attention to reviews these days. Most MMO veterans will agree that UO was a pinnacle of MMO gaming, yet I reckon if you gave a copy of pre-trammel UO to a reviewer today, that reviewer would probably only give it 2 or 3 out of 10. Assuming he could work out how to actually play it
True that, their are small things they need to fix but the combat is solid. However High level macro players need to be capped, thats my only fault with the combat.
Mob AI is some of the best I seen, went into an Hobgoblin camp the other day on my mount, got one to 1/2 hp and he ran inside a house and fired through the windows because I couldn't get in
.Never got the chance to play UO but wish I did as it sounds awesome, glad AV made Darkfall though.
By the way wouldn't happen to have a spare key for it would you?
