After endless problems and instability with my gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 im deciding to change boards.

I have narrowed it down to Asus P5K Premium or the Abit IP35 Pro and was wondering what experience people have had with these 2 boards, if if there is a better alternative please say so.

My budget is up to around £140

Im running a Q6600, 2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500C5, 2900xt so something that will run well with this setup and be easily overclockable.

Or maybe its worth waiting for the P45 chip to come out, as im considering upgrading gfx card when the new series come out.

Thanks

Hi and welcome :)

Yip wait for P45. There's no point dropping over £100 on a P35 atm.

firstly before you change MBs ,have you ruled out all other possible faults

faulty ram

incorrect voltages

unstable overclock if you are overclocking

secondly

im using the abit ip35 pro with a 2900XT , [email protected] and ocz platium DDR2 PC26400 RAM and it seems stable

just changed the RAM from 2gb OCZ 6400 because i first thought it was that ram but ive got the same prob with this cruical now

Then i thought it was the gfx card but i tried it in my girlfriends pc and was fine and i still got errors with her card in mine.

Ive tried endless tweaking in bios as suggested on forums etc, so i came to the conclusion the board must be screwed which is strange because ive only done minor overclocking on it.

Now when i try to change the chip fsb to anything higher than stock it gives more erros in memtest and prime95.

I kind of ran out of ideas so blamed the mobo.

Is it a Rev 1.1 or higher? They overheat because Gigabyte went cheap and stopped fitting proper cooling to the chipset.

Its revision 1

Is there any way to test the motherboard for errors and is there any chance of the ddr2 slots getting damaged and causing these problems? when i tried putting just 1 stick ram in it seemed a little more stable.

Is there any set date for the P45s yet?

In about a month.

You could try running Memtest86+ on each of the slots with a single stick.

abit IP35 Pro is a great board & it's finally now dropping down in price (held up due to demand) because the Pro XE has arrived.
Does P45 actually bring anything that you really need as it inevitably will be dearer than P35?

well to be honest im not so sure what the new P45 offers, i just thought that it maybe smart to get something that is futureproofed for a while and if i get one of the new graphics cards when they come out wont it benefit from the P45?

Or is it not that bigger difference in performance?

also, could anyone suggest some voltages for me to try in bios that should make the computer stable?

Ive tried upping the ddr2 by 0.4 (stock is at 1.8 i think so that should be right for 2.2?), whether the actual voltage is enough im not sure because its often a little lower than what it should be.

Ive tried upping vcore a bit by 0.15 and changing the timings of the RAM manually to what it says on the packaging. Also tried it at different speeds by changing the multiplier (gets a little more stable at lower speeds i feel) but theres still errors.

maybe ive just been very unlucky with getting faulty RAM and should try to get some more, so if anyone could come with a suggestion as to some decent stable ram that will fit my setup i could really appreciate it.

The Ballistix is specced at 2.2v, so that should be grand.

What kind of errors are you getting?

Well ive just had endless blue screens tonight so writing a reply was hard and the sytem just reboots itself every few mins when i try do something on windows.

Also get errors when installing applications , particulaly games , it says files are corrupt and so and so data cannot be transfered. Also get constantly kicked out of WoW too with errors that relate to memory transfer and file corruption (fatal exeption blah blah).

I had xp installed but then apparently system files became corrupt and i couldnt even get on for more than 5 seconds before it reboot itself, so i installed vista as a dual boot and its more stable but has recently got worse. Note that its no longer saying the xp files are corrupt so i can get on there a bit now.

yeah tried all of them and in both dual and single channel mode (less instabilty on single channel). Also tried with 1 stick which works ok but it shouldnt be necessary to be honest and becaue i use vista 2gb is really needed.
