Hey Guys

Have inherited a PB full system from someone who wanted data recovery on their drive. The mainboard is fried but all other components seem to test out ok. Inside is a Q6600, Nvidia AGP Card and about 4Gb of RAM. Ideally I would like to get the system up and running as a spare PC for a family member but finding a Socket 775 board with AGP seems like a hard task. Does anyone have any knowledge of a decent model? Not looking for where to buy as if OcUK dont sell it then I can do the legwork myself.

Cheaper the better. They are currently using an old P4 shuttle system with a dying mobo so even cheap will be an upgrade! They dont have funds to push to a mobo + PCIE graphics card as that would have been a much easier option!

Thanks

Couldnt you just get something like a P45 board thats pci-e and use the onboard graphics? The agp card will be not up to much anyway and going pci-e will mean you can upgrade in the future

What AGP card is it exactly?

It may be cheaper getting a motherboard with onboard graphics - might actually perform better too if the NV gpu is dead old! :D

gt

Edit: Ha ha... beaten to it! :)

Think its a Nvidia 9600 with 768Mb RAM. Nothing special but the one they have in the shuttle is a Ati X1650 so it was better. Hadn't considered onboard graphics but something I could look at. Recommendations welcome as I have not built a PC for myself in 4 years and I am miles behind the scene now.

What will they be using it for? If they want to play Crysis then a 9600, 1650 or onboard wouldnt work too well (at all) If they use if like most family PCs, ie internet, office and the odd older game then it will be fine with latest onboard pci-e graphics

Sims is a (crappy) family game, so they will be fine

Not big gamers. Mainly office bits with the odd bit of Eve or strategy game etc. Maybe a bit of SimCity. The AGP card has a HDMI port so considered setting it up as a media server for them on their TV so they could stream Iplayer etc to the tv. I have PS3 for mine but again would save them an investment.

Sometimes not worth polishing a turd but when a turd is all your have then you break out the polish and make it shine...

Showing how far behind the times I am I had another friend look at the system last night and it appears there is actually a PCI-E card in place and not AGP. Although the description on the card has the wording for AGP it is a PCI-E slot and connector and a quick google of the part number shows a PCI-E.

As such can anyone recommend a cheapish LGA-775 board? The last one I bought was a P38 chipset and these are old hat now so not aware of differences with current generation. Obviously dont need massive overclocking potential or anything but support for a few HDD's and as much integrated as possibel would be good (LAN, Audio etc).

Thanks
