Which motherboard would you use?

Hi folks, I have two motherboards that I am going to use my old Q6600 in but I can't make up my mind what one would be best to use.

I bought a P5W64 WS Professional from auction that was classed as not working. All it needed was a new battery. :D
Then I have a P5QPL-AM that I bought a while back. The only thing is, the P5QPL-AM is newer but newer isn't always better.

Also what is the point of the P5W64 WS 4 graphics card slots? Seems a bit pointless to me

So which motherboard would you use? Can't make up my mind. Lol

Cheers.

Go for the one that overclocks the best (no idea which that is, not familiar with these two boards). Used to have a Q6600 (good overclocker) but the MB (Asus P5NE-SLI) was absolutely pathetic for overclocking.

I ran a q6600 on a P5KPL-AM EPU and was able to manage a mild oc but its really not designed for ocing. The P5Q version doesnt look much different.
The P5W64 has beefier power circuitry but as you say is older, assuming all is well with it it ought to manage it better BUT despite the power phases may also not be designed for overclocking and may have limited range/bios options for it.
If you intend to OC id say test the P5W64 first. If not then go straight to the P5QPL (which would be my choice as it's likely to be less knackerd).

G41 mobo by default can use 1333 FSB, so o/c might be less tricky on P5QPL-AM. But G41 was not intended for o/c, so anything "big" over 1333 might be impossible. But on the other hand, 1333 FSB = 3 GHz with your Q6600, so unless you've got G0 revision you should be happy with :)

Because o/c is not everything, you might find PCIe 4x slots interesting in P5W64, it's why WS = workstation. Since PCIe is not only graphic bus (unlike AGP), you might use 4 different cards here, for example: 2 Radeons in CrossFire + 1x SATA3 (or SCSI Ultra 320) controller + X-Fi Ti PCie sound card. P5W64 has got 2 gigabit's LAN which allows you to use "teaming" technology (better multiple simultaneous connections to your host as LAN server):

I used to have a P5NE-SLI and had my Q6600 OC at 3GHZ. It was a pain and nvidia motherboard chipsets are god awful. Never again would I buy a motherboard with a nvidia chipset.

It died anyway in 2011 and that is when I bought sandy bridge i7.

Thank you and eddyr both for your detailed input. I will go with the P5W64 and I think I do have the G0 revision. The P5W64 only cost me £14 but sells used for about £50. Not bad when the only reason it would not boot, was because of a dead battery.
