Help !

I'm in a dilema which one to get !

Both look great, and in terms of appearence I am tending to go for the MX518, however whats the software like ? Is it the same for both of them can you program the buttons on MX518 to do ceratin things in game ?

Cheers

I've only owned the G5 - it's an awesome mouse, silky smooth.

The one thing that bugs me is left and right functionality of the G5 scroll wheel - it makes it really hard to 'middle click' the scroll wheel (e.g. for tabbed browsing in firefox). But I installed the logitech setpoint software and assigned 'left scroll wheel click' to middle click. So it almost feels the same.

Other than that, great mouse. I believe the MX518 doesn't have this 'quirk', but lacks the precision of the G5. Still I bet it's a great mouse (I owned an MX510 which sounds almost identical)

Many thanks, I think I'll go for the MX518 most likely, dont play as much shoot'em up now days, and that going to be so much better that the MS optical mouse (first generation one i think)

Cheers for the help

I would suggest the G5 anyday.

The tracking it has is leagues above the 5xx series.
Even for Windows tasks.
(have used both - Still use both actually!)

My old logitech wireless oem mouse had this problem. It was absolutely fine for the first 3 months, no problem middle clicking, and then one day when you pressed down on the middle button it pushed left instead, and it was virtually impossible to actually press the middle button. (although how bad it was varied depending on the day :s). Sure it's not broken?

Anyway. I only own the 518. Was tempted by the G7 and partly I wish I had a wireless mouse again (attaching the mouse cable to a point above my monitor does pretty well at stopping the cable catching though). What put me off was the missing button - although you do have the extra side scrolling buttons that can be assigned.

It is the same software for both mice and works in exactly the same way. It's not bad but could do with a little more in the way of customisation options.

edit: realised it said G5... all still true though ;)

Nah on the G5 it's a 'feature' that you can rock the mousewheel left or right. Doing so is easy, but it makes it much harder to middle click. When I middle click it feels like I'm pressing all 3 directions at once. I hope they remove the left/right rocking motion off the G5 - then it would be a perfect mouse.

The thing that put me off buying an MX518 over a G5 is that the feet on the MX518 are the small ones - which could come off after a few months of use (as they did on my MX510). The G5 has great big slidey feet which feel smoother and look solid.

Also as other's have said the G5 is very accurate and a pleasure to use in every game / windows.

yeh was a feature on this mouse as well, didn't make that clear in my post.. :). I think it may be done slightly differently on the G5 though.

It’s the fact that there is only one side button which has stopped me buying a G5, I use my pc for gaming and after having had a mouse with 2 side buttons there is no going back (they are also great as forward and back buttons when browsing the web) that’s why I went for a Razor Copperhead but do not recommend them as they are an **** to set up.

It annoyed me a little at first.

But compared to the MX700 and MX1000 - The tracking on the G5/7 more than makes up for it.
Simply the best mouse I've used - By some margin.

MICE ARE PERSONAL PREFERENCE!!!
there is no such thing as this x mouse is better than y!
To an extent...

The G series IS more accurate than the MX. It does work on more surfaces flawlessly.
Far better wireless range. (Although the MX series you still couldn't read the screen at its max range)
None of the 'querks' that the MX1000 had.
Better battery solution to the MX700/MX1000.

So in almost every way the mouse has been improved since the last models.

If you already have an MX518 then there is no need to upgrade IMHO.
But if you want a (technically and practically) better mouse - Then the G range is what you need.

When you consider that the shape of the MX700, MX518 and G7 are nearly identical - The performance and button-age are the only options left.

If you MUST have 2 side buttons - MX. If you want the best performing mouse... G.
