Which NAS for Windows, Linux and Mac clients?

I'm looking for a NAS for my home network but it needs to be compatible with Windows 8.1, Mac OS X 10.10 and Linux (Arch Linux). I don't need that much storage so 4TB or so should be enough but I'd like RAID 1 on the NAS itself in-case one of the hard drives fail.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which NAS would work best in this situation?

Do you guys have them running at the moment? If so how fast are they over a 1 Gbit ethernet network? I'm not that fussed about speed but I have over 1TB to copy and I'd like to know what kind of performance I can expect.
 
The lower end Synology devices generally have a throughput of between 40 and 80Mb/s depending on what sort of files are being transferred. I don't have one myself but I use the Synology OS on my own home-brew NAS and can confirm it's very good.

Cool. As long as it supports RAID 1 that speed should be acceptable. I have quite a lot of important files that I need to backup so I'm looking to pull the trigger on this purchase within the next couple of days.

Use the Synology hybrid raid, it gives 1 drive fault tolerance and allows you to add more / larger drives as you go, which is handy if you don't have the spare cash for 4 disks straight away.
 
I have the DS414

DS414J is the cheaper option (a little bit slower, but still decent speeds)

After running a custom built server for a few years, I love the Synology. Super low power consumption and a great interface for managing files along with the hybrid raid.

Recommend getting Western Digital RED drives for it.

Just so you know, when you add a drive to it, it will do a full disk check and format of the drive. Will be formatted as EXT4. Took a long time to add my 6TB drive, it was usable after about 5 minutes, but was still running the disk check for about 8 hours.

I waited until the disk check was complete before adding data.

With the Synology RAID, if you add a disk, it will expand the array and move the data accordingly.

+1 for the synology drives but you are going to need more than £100 unless you find a used one going cheap ....

Also do get the Red drives I have 2 and they are perfect.
