Which NAS server to get and should I get one

My main requirements are to back up by data on a centrally accessible device (have a couple of PCs at home and a couple of media players that I would like to share files with)..

I would like the ability to store files directly on the NAS while working on a PC e.g. my PC should see this as just another drive...so the idea is that when I save some pictures/videos/docs in My Documents, it is acutally getting stored on the NAS...

is this possible?

whats the best NAS to get (RAID 1)... I have mainly seen two: Synology and QNap... am a newbie when it comes to networking etc so the easier to use the better!...

any suggestions?

PS and the NAS should be accessible by a PC running Windows XP and Windows 7!
