which new car - help!

Hi all,

I've been reading the forums for quite some time, but this is my first post, so be gentle!!

I'm looking into buying a car, with a budget in mind of about £4k. I'm currently driving a pug 308 diesel, which whilst has been fine, I no longer need (due to a new job which is much closer to home) and would quite like something a bit more fun.

I have been looking for the past few weeks at 52 odd plate BMW 3 series and slightly newer golf's.

I know that there are quite a few BMW experts on the forum, so I wondered if anyone could recommend which model, and perhaps if anyone else had any other suggestions.

What's your servicing/maintenance/warranty budget?

to be honest I hadn't really thought about extra costs, but I guess anything up to a grand a year
