Which new fan?

So I noticed that my new cpu has been getting really hot even at 1.32v @ 4.8GHz, which I thought was strange because my heatsink is huge, so I set the cpu fan to max speed in the bios, but still there was no difference, so I decided to take a closer look and realised that at it's max of ~1200rpm I could barely feel any airflow, no wonder it's silent! As soon as I blasted the heatsink with a powerful air source, the temps came right down. So new cpu fan time.

Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but intuitively it seems that fan output and thus noise is purely a factor of rpm, and PWM means that the fan only spins as fast as it needs to, so I should just be looking towards buying a fan around the 2000rpm range?

I've seen the Noctua NF-F12 PPC 2000 PWM at £22 which has great reviews and even a 3000rpm version but it seems that increasing the airflow to that sort of level doesn't give any additional cooling benefit. Can anyone suggest any other models around the 2000rpm range? LED's would be nice as the Noctua is a bit plain.
 
Its not just about speed. Better fans have different shaped blades or a narrower centre to get higher airflow from the same rotational speed, or even bumpy blades that make less noise.
Can your heatsink take a 2nd fan?

You'll be surprised just how noisy a 2000 rpm fan will be compared with your 1200rpm.
 
I think the Noctua is a great choice. Another possibility would be the Corsair ML120 PRO. It's a good quality fan that has the same low limit RPM as the Noctua ( well a tiny bit lower ) but a higher maximum RPM of 2400. The Corsair generates more static pressure and has greater airflow, but of course is noisier if you use it at 2400RPM. I would say the Noctua is the better fan, but the Corsair is somewhat more flexible.

The moment you overclock an 8600K they do start to generate a lot of heat. Running on all cores they generate something like 40% more heat than at stock.
 
What Tealc asked. Asking us what fan to get is like asking us what tires to get without telling us what they are to be used on. ;

Also, what case and motherboard do you have?
 
The other fans on the case matter too. If you're not pulling in fresh cool air and venting the hot air, it won't make much difference replacing the CPU fan with one that blows harder.

Exactly!
If cooler is not receiving a good supply of cool air and cooler fan is running full speed it will be re-using it own heated air, and every degree warmer the air is going into cooler becomes a degree hotter CPU will be. ;)

100 degrees, it throttles. Heatsink is a scythe ninja 3.

As for the case, I haven't put it in the case yet so it's sat at an ambient room temperature of 21 degrees.

Something is wrong!
Scythe Ninja 3 is a good cooler with a good stock fan.
Could be too much voltage / too much overclock .. bad mount / TIM seat .. maybe something else.

What does it do when not overclocked?

What fan do you now have on cooler and what fans do you have?
 
When @ stock it didn't overheat, it only does so now after around 10mins of running at 100% like encoding and the heatsink gets red hot so it's doing it's job, it simply seems to be that the fan isn't pushing enough air through the heatsink.

I have no idea what fan is on it honestly but probably not the stock one, the build was nearly 6 years old before I upgraded and components had been swapped out a bit.

Maybe you should back the overclock down some so you can lower the voltage and thus lower the heat it's producing.

How are we supposed to believe what you are saying when you make statements like 'heatsink gets red hot' ? 'Red hot' metal is several times hotter than 100c. :p I've said it a million time, don't exaggerate. :D

I would think there should be some marking on center of fan like logo on impeller side and specs on back side of motor .. at least there is on most fans.
 
I'm not going to reduce the performance of my computer in order to save a few quid on buying an adequate fan.

Sheesh! You say you don't know what fan is, then tell me no, you won't even check to see if it cools okay with lower OC.
That fan is about as bad as it can be. It is a 1000rpm maximum speed with up to 43.5cfm and 0.62mmH2O .. not enough power to overpower a 3 month old's sneeze.
The stock fan on Ninja 3 is Slip Stream 120mm PWM Adjustable that idles at 470 and goes up to 1900rpm and can flow up to 110cfm and makes up to 2.3mmH2O.

So yeah, you need a better fan for your cooler. ;)
 
I already said it cools ok at stock, and yes as I said in the OP I need a better fan. I was asking for recommendations...

I have taken pocah's words onboard and have ordered the Noctua.
