I have been going round in circles Co sidering which new card to get, primarily used for gaming in VR with my rift s and 1080p gaming.

I have a 4th gen i7, 16gb ram and a recently purchased 1060 card.

I was considering 2060 or 2070 Super cards, or should I go 5700xt? Mainly as I have the vr bug and I see slowdown in elite dangerous...

Driver issues on the 5700xt concern me in threads, but the cost/performance benefit obviously are appealing.

Which should I go do you think, and why?

Are the RADEON drivers really that bad, or do I just see the exceptions posted where people have issues?

Hi i had a 5700xt and have experienced crashes while playing RE3, and micro stuttering while playing COD Warzone. I would probably stay away from AMD gpus, perhaps they will fix their driver issues with the new cards

I have a Sapphire Pulse 5700, my partner and son both have RX580's.
I thoroughly recommend the 5700(xt) - there was a 2/3 month period where the drivers were awful. I had crashes and bad textures and poor performance. This was only on my 5700 though, the RX580's in our house were completely unaffected.
I simply went back to the old driver that was stable. There were 4 or 5 bad driver releases, I tried them all and each time went back to the old version.
Happy to say that is all now sorted and the previous few driver updates have all been fine.

And the value for money on the 5700(xt) is very good. Don't regret the purchase at all, although I did swear about it more than once during Dec/Jan :)

My 2080 Ti was stable out of the box and I purchased at launch or soon thereafter.

As was my 7, been solid since day 1. Bar one or two drivers. Not everybody has that experience mind and some on both sides have issues, its almost expeted with the masses of hardware available today. Remember the failing 20 series on release (space invaders and all) or are issues on one side forgotten?

Those are due same time as the new Nvidia ones :) Big navi they say!
Indeed and I'm looking forward to upgrading my current aging r9 390. I'm OK with either as long as there is a good leap in performance this generation, which should be at least for nvidia as its built on 7nm.

You never know, they have both had awesome cards as well as flops. Will be interesting to see what comes next for sure.

The mixed comments about the 5700XT is what most concerned me, nvidia is safer but dearer, and the 5700XT seems to have more promise and be cheaper. My wifes 590 has no issues, great card but I just want more. I appreciate I could wait for the next card but cant really be bothered, if needs be I can always upgrade again in a year.

I've owned every top end AMD gpu for the last probably 15 years or more (since 9700pro rv300) and the only one I ever had trouble with was a MSI twin forza think it was a 290x where the silicon was so poor it wouldn't reach its clocks without artifacting, to put it in perspective I currently own at least 15 AMD gpus and all are working without issue, as for the MSI it went back to MSI several times before going in the bin. Like anything it appears to be luck of the draw some people get good ones and some not so much. You could also buy an nv card and be plagued with black screens and issues as I was reading in this section the other day. I don't think going to one vendor over the other is a sure fire way of avoiding issues. If you get a good one of either brand you should be golden.

Get a bad one and you will likely know about it :)

My story: bought a Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC in March, played RE3 experienced crashes and micro stuttering, played warzone and experienced micro lags/stuttering. Tried both new and old drivers. Sent the card back to the seller, they say they didn't find any problems with it and sent back, in the meantime I bought a 2070 Super and all these problems are gone, gameplay is super fluid, temperatures are much better (68 vs 84 in my case).

So don't know to be honest, my 5700 XT is up for sale now, but i feel like nvidia is a much better (but pricey) option

I would hold off for the new cards coming in a couple of months as you should be able to get rtx 2080ti perf for around 5-600 quid.

I doubt you'll be able to get a 3070 before October to be honest, that's if even they release it together with the 3080, their strategy is always to release the high end card (and most expensive) first, so people buy those to upgrade, following by the others. You also have to take in consideration covid19 and the distribution, there might be not a lot of them available at launch.

My last few AMD GPU's (a Vega 64 and VII) have been completely stable. I haven't had a 5700XT (the VII is too good to change) but I hear they are good. I specced one for my son's friend and he seems happy with it.

Budget? If you don’t mind 2nd hand i pickup up an evga 2080ti off ebay with almost 3 years warranty for £825.

I have similar setup to you, i7 [email protected], 16gb ram.

I play at 3440x1440 but everything flies when i’ve tried it at 1080p

I would ignore ati cards until their sort their crap drivers. It sounds like they are still as shocking as they were in the late 90s and ~2006 when i owned ati gpu’s. Going X1900XT to 8800GT was a wise choice of mine

I writing believe everything you read, I've had no issues with my 5700XT. Conversely I've read about many 2080Ti owners with borked cards, one guy on here has had to return a card four times. There's s lot of luck involved and a fair dose of user error. Someone else was having stuttering issues with a 5700XT, turns out he was overclocking it too far and it was getting too hot.

I had an MSI 1070 Gaming X before my 5700XT and to be fair if you didn't look inside the case you wouldn't know, other than the newer card obviously being faster.
