I am trying to decide on how to set up my wifi at home. At present I have an 02 Wireless Box II which is crap. Dropped connections are regular and having changed from Be, this new router is poor compared to the 780wl I had before.

So I am tring to decide on that to get. Initally I was thinking of a Linksys ADSL2+ Router, but I am temped to go for:

and then get a £50 DD WRT flashed router from an online source.

Is this a good idea or should I just stick with an all in one type package?

Would advise on the Linksys Modem AM200 or 300 for ADSL and then a Buffalo WHR G125 (better than the Linksys WRT54GL) for ~£35 and flash it with DD-WRT yourself.

This is if you are going 802.11g only...

I wouldn't stick with an all in one as the above method can be used for both types of connections.

Depends on your need. Tomato is more user friendly and has more QoS options for packet prioritisation. DD-WRT is more complex and not as friendly (subjective) but has some very powerful options.

I use tomato on my Linksys WRT54GL (downstairs connected to the cable modem) and DD-WRT on the Buffalo WHR G125 configured as a repeater bridge; this extends the wireless range and allows me to connect ethernet ports to it.

DD-WRT is the only option for a repeater setup as it has more options available to it.

As you'll notice, I have both devices but prefer the buffalo due to the improved chipset in it which is faster and has better wireless range.

There is another option in the ASUS WL500g V2 Premium which is the same as the buffalo but with 2 USB ports which can be configured as a NAS with a USB device plugged in. Costs about £55 if you shop around.
