Which of the new X2 cpus clocks best?

They all seem to overclock pretty similarly to be honest. Most X2 3800+ chips seem to hit in the region of 2.5GHz, some going to 2.6GHz. Most 4400+ chips seem to hit 2.6 also, with 2.7 or maybe even 2.8 if you're lucky. Average seems to be somewhere in the region of 2.6GHz though - for all of them.

yup, Phemo is right all current x2's clock pretty similarly, I would just get the cheapest one which shares the same core type.
As you ask about overclocking you really shouldnt over look the dual core opterons, they clock on air much better, and all have 1m l2 cache. for price/performance you cant beat the 165.

I would go for an x2 3800+, since it's the cheapest one and it overclocks well. My 24/7 clock is [email protected], cooled with an scythe ninja :)

And btw; it's pointless to buy a x2 4200+, then I would much rather go for the x2 4400+. So either x2 3800+, or x2 4400+ if you believe you need the extra l2 cahce.

I would think about how you can reach 2.6 before buying any kit as a 4400 has is 11x (and can do less than 11x) multiplyer so ideally you would need ram that can handle 260 as x.5 multiplyers are not good & using the divider slows things up as RAM/DDR bus speed is better at 260/520 rather than 163/326.

I wouldnt agree , it doesnt make much diffrence at all on 939.

Try it for yourself and you will see.

Running out of sync on my rig didnt change my results by much at all.

Back in the days of Socket A running out of syc was a big no no.

When I go auto & run stuff with the memory running at eg 163mhz, 3dmk05 runs a few thousand points less, maybe something wierd going on with my setup ?.
Anyone else try with or without RAM running with a divider ?.

if you run your ram frequency that low I'm sure you will notice a difference.

currently I'm running my opty 170 at 2.85ghz with my ram running at 260mhz on the 180 divider. this is quicker than having the cpu at 2.7ghz 1:1 with my ram at 270mhz (ram doesn’t oc as well on a divider I've found)
dividers work very well!

guys how does the opty 170 compare to the x2 4400+. is the extra 1mb of l2 cache on the opty worth dropping 200mhz for?

similarly the 165 has 1.5mb l2 cache over the x2 3800+ for loss of 200mhz is also this worth it? (thinking i'm getting confused how the cache works on these duel core chips)

and while i'm at it. is the significant price difference between these respective chips worth it consider i'm not a stranger to overclocking having knocked up my old 2500+ barton to a 3200+ back in the day

cheers
