Which of these boot problems are more likely?

Hi,

For the last year or so I've had a few boot problems where everything would start but it would not BIOS post, and would just sit there with the fans etc all going.

I've never been able to put my finger on the problem, even after starting or reading threads with similar problems. It would sometimes boot and sometimes not generally when left off for a long amount of time. When the system was on it was rock solid stable in all areas.

Anyway, last week I built my new PC, generally without any hitches. However the cold boot problems started once again relatively soon.

As our house is in a village and during previous power problems have had to be put on a generator in the past (not sure if we are still on it), I thought somehow my newer PC was not getting the required power for the higher watt PSU (600, previous was 430). I haven't had a chance to test the computer in another town as of yet.

So today as usual it did not start so I removed the sound card to cut the amount of power needed to start it. And it started first time, put it back in to make sure and it didn't start, so took it out and here I am. Now the weird thing is as far as I know the sound card works pretty much all the time, however now I think about it I have occasionally started up and had no audio device detected (1 in 100 starts or so).

I've narrowed the problem down to either being the Power in our house however I don't know how possible that is... Or something is wrong with the sound card - which generally works fine when the system is on.

I'm looking for any feedback you can give, thanks.

The sound card would have an awefully Low power consumption anyway, so I dont think it would be putting strain on the PSU... and it isnt detected in the bios until a later point, so bios should still run up until a point.
I may be wrong, of course, but it seems more of a motherboard problem... but, you updated the motherboard in the new build?

Yeah it's a new Motherboard with the latest BIOS and revision. Makes me believe its the sound card then as it's starting every time without it installed and that is the only piece of hardware I did not upgrade with the new build.

Yeah it's a weird one, guess I'll be able to know for sure tomorrow morning when I start it - then I'll try an older Sound Card to be sure.

I'll probably get a new one if it's definitely that, just using the old one to check it against something.

Started first time this morning, just think I'll put up with the horrible Realtek on-board sound for a while.
