My trusty old 17" crt has finally died and I'm really out of date when it comes to screens. so some opinions would be greatly appreciated.

The viewsonic 20" va2012w at £199 looks good value, is the vx2025 worth £80 more ?
Or am I better off with the 19" samsung 930 or 40bf ?
Is there anything else for a little more that would be better ?
Forgot to add it's for gaming only and my gfx is a 512 x1800xt.
Thanks. :)

this article should help highlight the differences between the Viewsonic VA2012W and the VX2025WM. Basically they are both using different panel technologies. Both offer pretty comparable responsiveness for gaming, but the VX2025WM offers much wider viewing angles, smoother movie playback and a deeper black depth as well. It's a more all round screen, but if you don;t need that, purely for gaming the VA2012W is good and would save you some money :)

The Samsung 930BF and 940Bf are more responsive screens and are arguably some of the fastest panels in the whole market right now. For gaming, these would offer an edge thanks to the heavy application of overdrive technology by Samsung to boost grey to grey transitions. The resolution of a 19" model might also be easier for your graphics card to handle, but on the flip side, the screen size is obviously less, so depends what you're looking for. They are certainly good gaming screens, and purely from a gaming perspective, might be a little more suited to most people.

Just what i wanted to hear Badass :P

Any major differences over the 930 and 940 bf? Apart from response time, i think im going to just get the 940bf anyways, just nice to hear about it :)

Oh and also, ive been oogling over the Hyundai L90D+ also...???

no major difference at all really. They both use the same Samsung TN Film panel, but Samsung have managed to rate it at 2ms rather than 4ms. At the end of the day, it is most likely to be a large degree of marketing and it is only the best case measurement. Maybe they did find a slightly faster transition at some point, but most likely just trying to keep up with current trends and models like the VX922. I doubt you'd see any difference between the 930BF and 940BF.

The Hyundai L90D+ is also a good screen. It's covered in the sticky as well. It's actually using the same Samsung TN Film panel as the other two, but just without the application of overdrive. Still pretty responsive, but just lacks that boost on grey transitions. Not quite as responsive as the overdriven models in real use, but still very good.

Yeah i had a little gander on the sight, comparing the 930vf from samsung and the hyundai L90D+, i think they were saying the hyundai is better? in a sense, atleast for gaming, or did i read that wrong, it was talking about how you can quite easily see the whiteness of windows being dragged around the screen trailing...

You used either of these two? Cause i can get the Hyundai one from work, but obviously id want the "better" monitor of the two, and i also want it to last a fair few years in all fairness :P

ill have to read the two articles comparing the samsung and hyundai again i think :S

Rite erm, if i can decide tonight which is better : the samsung 930bf or 940 bf, or the Hyundai LD09+, then i can order tomoz, if its the Hyundai i can get it from work or here also...So yea, opiniosn :S again... :P

well like i say, they fundamentally all use the same panel anyway. The only difference is in the application of overdrive. The L90D+ doesn't use it, the 930BF and 940BF do, with it applied a little more aggressively on the 940BF perhaps, not by much though.

This technology is good for boosting response times on grey transitions and in real use, the responsiveness of the overdriven panels like this is a bit better. In some situations this overdrive can lead to some trailing and white halos if the overdrive is poorly controlled. Tbh it might be hard to tell the difference between these in general use, while you might get a slightly more responsive screen from the Samsung models, you might suffer from the side effects of overdrive, it's hard to say. The Samsung's are faster though and average users don't really notice an issue with the overdrive artefacts really (if you read all user comments about them all)

tough call, maybe just go with whichever you like the looks, price and features of more

Thats the problem...i know nout about Tft's in all fairness, ive read god things about the Samsung, and the Hyundai, and its annoying :P To be frank.

Ah k, so the Overdrive "could" make white halos appear if implemented improperly....Darnit, Tough call tho, i just want a monitor for Games, the odd film wen im bored, and Web surfing lol, So id rather not have ghosting, or white trails, or just generally a poor monitor over my current Dell 19" CRT.

Im prepared to go no more than £300 i guess, hence why ive included the 940BF on the radar too, as im trying to buy a new system at the same time too :S Then my monitors decided to die :P ah well's.

If you wanted some fast models with better overdrive control, the Viewsonic range are better. The performance on the VX922 for instance is very good and AUO (the panel manufacturer) have their overdrive implementation much more well controlled. this would mean less overshoot and less white trailing caused by overdrive. something to look at i think :)
