Which of these is faster?

Wow those two really do trade blows...
Always conscious of the old proverb, 'Buy a 470, take out home insurance'.
Temps and consumption won't be helped by an overclock I wager, and I'm not getting an aftermarket.

Maybe I'll just flip a coin.

Can you tell us what games your thinking of running, what resolution you play at and your system specs? This way, we can give you a better answer :) Well, not give you a better answer but you get what I mean haha :P

Can't say about resolution, haven't got a decent monitor yet, so we'll just give it a general 'as high as possible' :)
Specs are:

CPU: i5 760 (likely overclocked to 3.6~)
Cooler: Hyper 212 Air
RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 16000
PSU: 750w Corsair Modular

Motherboard depends on which I choose (For either SLI or Crossfire)

Games I intend to run are along the lines of Crysis, Metro 2033, and a heavily modded New Vegas.

Yeah that's a bit better :)

Your system specs are very good for a start so no bottle necking will occur :)

Giving me the games you are thinking of running, I would for Nvidia as its newer than the 5870, and runs metro a lot better than ATI. However, the new generation cards are released next month so maybe its best to wait till then to grab the bargains or even think about taking up one of the new cards :)? Hope this helps.

With those results, I would say the gtx 470 takes the 5870 as you gain 5fps min frames over the 5870, avg fps, you wouldn't notice the difference, and you get 10 years warranty with EVGA iirc.

I can see what he's saying though, given the surrounding elements (sound, energy, heat) the 470s FPS advantage seems tiny. I'd say it was a finished contest if it weren't for the nagging feeling that the XFX 5870 shown is so cheap compared to OTHER 5870s- makes me think theres something wrong with it.

Evidently the superclock doesn't add much of an advantage...shame :(

If your psu can support both cards and your on the fence then it comes down to a few things:

5870 = Cooler, naturally quiter, uses less power & (Stream technology) (You get eyefinity as well I suppose)

GTX 470 = Physx, better tesselation performance, some would argue better driver/game support, better overclocker & (Cuda)

Which of those set of features is more appealing/important too you.

When I bought my 5870, I was debating between these two cards.

It came down to one thing. I needed the quiter out of the two, as computer is only foot away and at ear level. So 5870 it was.

My advise, would probably be go for the 470, if your not in the market to afford the GTX 570 or the new 6900 series from ATI, which will be £250-£300 price range.

Does it matter that your 5870 is 2GB though while this is only 1GB?

I wouldn't be so stressed if I thought that by January 5870's might still be available for about that price (£180-200) or even less with the new releases. My only qualm is that by January there may be none left for that cheap.

And from all the benchmarks I've seen, 5870 actually seems to do better at...everything... weirdly.

Nah overall the extra 2gb of ram pretty much has 0% effect....

Maybe accross all games something like 1-2fps extra.

The 5870 is good for sure.... but if the GTX 470 has higher minimum frams as people say it does, then my advise is still GTX 470.

In my opinion, I think benchmarks are bs! Especially web based ones. Simply becuase they all differ from each other.

However desipte this Anandtech are respected and here is a comparison bettween the 5870 and the regular 470.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/162?vs=160

Although bear in mind this benchmark is not showing minimum frames which is probably the most important thing to consider.

If both cards are priced equally Id think the 470 has more features... where as the 5870 is cooler.

Overclckers do that. They make one product look so apealing compared to the others to tempt you to buy.

Its not cheap becuase its defective.... if it was they couldnt sell it.

An XFX 5870 (specifically THIS 5870):
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-147-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1502

OR, an EVGA 470 'SuperClocked' (I assume that means its well overclocked? Since I don't know how to do it myself)

I don't really know which numbers represent speeds etc, so if any information is needed I'll try and supply.
Wait until next week & the GTX570 is announced as its bound to affect the prices for 5870/GTX470 as its effectively plugging the GTX470 market so prices will drop & you will get a better deal (if a GTX570 @ £300 or slightly less is not something you want to buy that is ;)). GTX480 will also drop quite a bit so just hang on until then!!
