Which one of these would you go for ...

i7-4700MQ Quad core with GT 840M 2GB

or

i7-5500U Dual Core with GTX 850M 4GB

Just an office PC with some light gaming in mind. Both the same price. I'm thinking go for the one with faster graphics if I want to game.
 
Get the 850M it's significantly more powerful. That's what matters in games more and the dual core is fine for office applications.
 
That's a big difference in CPU. One uses 3x the power and is more than 2x as fast, the other is designed as a low-voltage processor to maximise battery life where you wouldn't expect a discrete GPU.

Mind you for an Office PC it probably won't matter but it's an odd situation to have to choose between them.

Yeah better graphics unless you're going to need the CPU power..

Yes its an odd pairing as the dual core is half the speed of the quad core and the 850 is getting on for twice the speed of the 840.

Sadly no option to customise the arrangement so I'll go with the 850m one.
 
Is the laptop a Alienware M13?

Is so there may be other options available on the market which give you a better balance or CPU & GPU.

Nothing actually wrong with the spec I would just want something more potent unless it was an Ultrabook (thus no dGPU anyway).
