So like a complete muppet I won two separate auctions!

1) Asus ROG Maximus Formula, i7-7700K, 32GB, EK Waterblock

2) Gigabyte B350 Gaming 3, Ryzen 7 3700X, NH-D15

Given that the chosen item will be watercooled, would you run the better mobo (Formula) or the better chip (3700X)?

Hmm, so maybe split the Intel bundle and sell the chip separately, keep the 3200MHz RAM for the 3700X. How bad is a B350 Gaming 3?

The main Youtube reviewers don't tend to review the ryzen 300 series motherboards as they are basic. They aren't designed to overclock so the vram is usually basic. It takes upto ddr3200 ram though. So leave the 3700x at stock and try to set the ram to 3200 and your good to go. Its not worth trying to overclock the 3700x though as I have seen the ryzen 3000 series cpu degrade quite quickly from aggressive overclocking.

Its a decent system and should serve you well

I would leave the nh d15 on the cpu as the cpu is a low power unit and the cooler will have no problem with it, in fact its overkill for that cpu, if you change them be careful not to take the cpu out of the socket when removing the air cooler

Depends how much you paid, but knowing how much 7700Ks go for probably too much, so I'd like take the 3700X.

Please though tell us what you won them for. :)

3700x hands down, as a user of the b350 gaming 3, it's not a bad little board as long as you don't expect the world from it. Can overclock reasonably too.

Maximus IX Formula + EK Evo WB + 32GB 3200Mhx RAM + 7700K + delid tool and some odds and sods was £245 shipped
B350 Gaming 3 + 3700X + NH-D15 was £265

I think they were both pretty good deals but I just wasn't expecting to get them both :D
Maybe one of those will appear on MM at my cost ;)

FWIW, I'm moving up from a H81M + I5-4570

Originally super overexpensive mobo won't make quad core any less low end by today's standards.
Just remember that new consoles have 8 core CPU with 7 cores dedicated exclusively for use of games.

Hence already £50 would have been salty price from only adding HyperThreading over exiting PC...

Indeed, but as a project I'm starting to think that having a high-end mobo with internal USB-C connector for my P500A, some RGB with connectivity for the other RGB items in the existing rig, a water-cooled VRM (for giggles) and maybe playing with some overclocking for the first time in years might be a laugh. Pushing to 5GHz would be new for me too.

I suspect also that I will find it easier to move on a 3700X without losing too much.

If I keep the 3700X, I need to invest in a new block for AM4, and that B350 motherboard will annoy me I think.

I suppose if I were actually using any of that power in a 3700X it might be worth it but I really don't. My most arduous game is playing solitaire. The 1070 Seahawk isn't even connected to a monitor.

Thanks for all the comments. Sadly when the 3700X bundle arrived it had not fared well with the carrier and the NH-D15 was badly bent so a lot of stress must have been applied to the mount and the socket and even the board so it will be going back.

The Maximus IX Formula is a fabulous board. The BIOS is the most complex I've ever seen but the AI Suite auto-overclocking happily took the 7700K to 5GHz all cores. The RGB LED is OK. I'm happy to have an internal USB3.1 connection so that the front USB-C on my P500A now works.

The 7700K at 5Ghz is huge step up from my i5 at 3.5GHz.

What noob ships a board with a cooler like that fitted in the first place? Shocking. :(
