Which oil - Castrol, Mobil or Shell?

Oil service is coming up on the 10th May, and I've just been informed by my BMW dealer that they are to be using Shell Helix Ultra oil. Doesn't sound too impressive to me :\

Choices are stick with what BM are sticking in, Castrol Edge (What I've been rather expensively topping up with, thinking that's what BMW had used!) or Mobil 1.

Anyone have any opinions? :)

What do you mean by, doesn't sound impressive enough?

Shell Helix Ultra is a fully synthetic engine oil formulated to provide the ultimate engine protection for prestige and high performance vehicles. Tried and tested with Formula racetrack experience over many years, Shell Helix Ultra has been proven even under the most extreme driving conditions. Shell Helix Ultra exceeds the requirements of all major car manufacturers and industry standards API SL and ACEA A3/B3/B4-98.

£12.98 - £40.74
What sounds wrong with that, especially when its what the dealers use?

Castrol Edge 0w30, £45 for 8 litres on Ebay, your dealer will use it in a service for you.

I've managed to get an Inspection 1 down to less than £200 at my main dealer inc 325i loan car by offering to supply my own Castrol Edge :)

Not sure i would be happy buying oil off e-bay, could be so easy to pass off cheap oil as a more expensive one, much like the huge fake spare parts issue a few years back!

It's from a reputable dealer with sealed bottles.

I stick with Castrol Edge ( 10W60 ) , it's what BMW recommend and I am not going to take any risksf or the sake of a few quid

I think I'll supply my own Castrol Edge 0W-30. Will probably get it from Halfords unless Fox can show me proof that it's from a reputable dealer!

The Castrol Edge is the stuff you want in your BMW. Fox's link is VERY cheap, so cheap it has me wondering.
I agree. Ridiculously cheap!

To be honest, though, it's only as cheap as Mobil 1 in Costco. But then, how can one guy get as good a deal as one of the world's largest consumer warehouses? :p

I'm tempted, but then not tempted. I might wait to see if Fox's engine blows up first!

I use Mobil One 0w40 which is the stuff my dealer uses.

£19.99+VAT for 4l from Costco. I had my last dealer oil service down to £90 + the cost of 6.5l of Mobil One :)

I could pick up a couple of bottles for you if you want.
