Which one do I buy?

If you do not intend to overclock, both HD4870 & GTX260 "216 SP" offer similar performance and it is hard to choose a favourite.

If you will be overclocking the choice is easy - get the GTX260. The cores on these cards overclock massively and the memory does very well too. An overclocked 260 will out-perform a stock GTX280 but a 4870 1GB will not come close in most games.

The 260GTX is £150 on TWO.

Since they are similar performance wise to 4870 1gbs, and supposedly run cooler and a bit quieter then why not get that one since it meets your other suggestions, budget wise, half way? :)

260GTX has 892MB compared to 1024MB, it's not going to make any difference really, just stay away from 512mb cards.

Then check again...

*checks*

No, still the same.

Go and look at bit-tech's latest group tests.

The 4870 1GB is quicker than a GTX260 216.

never go by one review, I tend to look at around 5 or so, or if i have the time, every one i can find on google.
260 is way forward

Hijacking this thread, (Sorry OP) as I don't want to start another one (Don't really wanna draw too much attention to my new name :() but today I'm going for a 4870 1GB. But this thread makes me think a GTX260 might be better (moving up from a 8800GT). I also have a Crossfire board tho, so would get another ati 4870 at a later date.

I'm now confused. What should I do? :(

P.S. I also want a quiet cooler included on the card when it's idle in windows, but don't mind some noise when I'm gaming.

Getting a second graphics card for multi-gpu at a later date is almost always a bad idea. By the time you do that, there will be new cards available that are faster than a dual-gpu set up and don't have the potential hassle.

So just have a look at what's out there dude, see what you can get for how much, and weigh up the benefits of each one. Like I said above, just had to make this choice myself and went for a 260 because there was more value-added than the equivalent price 4870.

It depends on timing as you only got about 6 to 9 months(could be sooner) when next gen are out, no point in buying a second card just before they come out.
The 260 and 4870 are about equal you need to look at what games you play really

Thought you had a 280gtx Reflux? What happened to that. Just curious. Also, as I value your opinion - what do you think of your new card. Cheers :)
