Im really getting into this photographic lark and now it time to ditch the Fuji S5700 and get myself a proper DSLR.

Now i don't want to go mad on a Camera so narrowed it down to 2 either the Nikon D40x or the Canon EOS 400D also want a good zoom lense to go with either that not to expensive so what do you recommend.

i'd take the canon and then add as an entry level either the canon 70-300 USM, or the sigma 70-300 APO as a zoom.
(you'll find canon people will always recommend canon and nikon people nikon, its just the way of the world)

Both Canon and Nikon are great, you can't go wrong with either, so don't listen to either side's recommendations (which will always be their own) and instead get down to a camera shop and have a play with both.

in the end one will feel more natural and intuitive in your hands and as suggested above the only way to know that is to have a fiddle with both,

as far as pricing, quality, range of accessories, range of lenses etc go they are very evenly matched.

Yup, go have a play and decide which you like the feel of more. Also try searching this forum... this thread comes up several times a week.

agreed - did that myself and ended up with the D40 from Nikon - very happy!

Thats not entirely true, canon do have a considerable larger selection of lens and accessories, especially the lens selection in between consumer and professional.

One piece of advice i'd give is to pay as much as you can afford on the lenses. You might upgrade the body over time, but the lenses will generally stay with you, and retain most of their value. I went for the 400d and bought a nice L series lens (24-70).

They are both great camera's the canon has the edge over the nikon slightly and also for a novice it has a self cleaning sensor even the D80 doesn't offer that, In my opion the camera to compete with the 400D is the D80

True, but you have Sigma, Tokina and Tamron to make up for Nikon's gaps.

Self cleaning sensor is a bit gimmicky IMO, and while both cameras are pretty evenly matched, I prefer the D80 simply because of ergonomics.

The D80 is a great camera for an extra £200 but he is asking about the D40 as for the sensor cleaning being a gimmick may be so but from the reveiws it works and as a novice would be a handy option

As someone who just bought a D40..I would go for the Canon 400D. Mainly for the 9 point AF and self cleaning. Wouldn't bother paying extra for the D40x over the D40 to be honest. Oh and if you get a D40 you can only autofocus with new AFS/I lenses.

Also my advice to you would be, have a think about what types of photo you take the most and decide what lens to get, possibly buying the lens and body separately. The kit lens on the D40 is quite limiting at 55mm. If i had my choice again i wouldn't have got the kit lens, but then on the other hand, until you've used the camera properly it's hard to tell how you will fare.

Well i finally opted for the Canon EOS 400D & bought a cheap Tamron Di II AF 55-200mm F/4-5.6 lens to go with it 1Gb mem card and a nice camera bag all for just shy of £600 just to get me up and running.

Next month i start investing in some really goood lenses:cool:
