Okay guys i upgraded to the nvidia 295 last week as ive said in another post, but now i need a question answering for a friend. He asks me this

I have 250 pounds and i want a card that will run and max out games like mirrors edge, deadspace, grid, streetfighter 4 on 16x anti aliasing. Is there something available for that price.

Now im sure there is but seeing as i know little about ati, I can only answer this from the nvidia side. i was thinking about these cards.

Ok i think theres some quality cards there, he did mention to me about spending more and getting what i got, the 295 but although its an amazing card, i see little advantages of doing that when some of these cards will do pretty much the same wont they?

Please let me know guys which one of these cards you lot recommend, if we can do it like a voting thing that will be great. He is ordering on the 31st , so 11 days for him to make up his mind. Thanks for all your help and advice peeps.

:)

The 4870 X2 is the best card from the bunch I think, but the GTX285 won't be far behind really, and for the games he wants to play there's little point in getting a good card as they'll all run very well on a more moderately priced card.

Personally I'd go with nvidia because I believe the driver support to be better, though if you can get a 4870X2 for that price it's not bad at all, on paper it's the fastest, but driver support may change that depending on the game. I don't have one, might be better to wait for someone else to comment who does.

what about the final card, the sapphire 4890, 1000,mhz clock speed, is that slower than the 4870 x 2, which is 750mhz ( so thats x 2 is it ) .... sorry very new to ati.

Also what benefits would he get spending another 100 - 120 on the 295?

if getting the 275 or 4890 no point in spending over £175 as you can clock them urself to the higher speeds in most cases. The 4890 performs close to and sometimes beats the 285 so he could save a considerable amount of money and put it towards something else. If he has a crosffire mobo, 2x 4890 is the sweet spot at the moment.

well ive only just started using my 295 mate, for me it was basically just to max all games out too. So you also think the 4870 x 2 then, seems popular. And yeah i was looking at that 285 card, top right too.

Well, you could, as creed has said, go for one 4890, clock the nuts off it, and if it's not good enough put another one in and go crossfire, that'd perform well. You'd need a crossfire mobo though.

ok right i have to goto work now but his specs are

Asus P5q motherboard.
8800 GTX 640 mb card
800 watt coolermaster psu
8 gig ddr2 1066mhz corsair dominator
E8400 wolfdale overclocked to 3.92ghz x 2
Antec 1200 case

Thanks guys and ill check outthis forum later :)

I dont think he has a crossfire mobo unfotunately. Is 1 4890 gonna be good enough for all games? and how much does it overclock to.

Well you see the ATOMIC 4890 which is £235... a normal 4890 should be able to get an overclock to somewhere near there... he probably wont be able to get that clock because those cards are probably hand picked because of there overclocking potential.

EDIT: that motherboard only has one PCI-Express slot so it wont support CrossfireX or sli.

well if he has not got crossfire or sli board then surley the 4870x2 will be the best to get,and if you look around its a few quid cheaper and in stock

will still run a 295 or 285 or 4890 wont it?

Yea it can run any card, the above poster was referring to running two cards. The 4870X2 and GTX 295 are both two GPUs on one card so do run in xfire/sli but only require one slot.

If he wants to play Mirrors Edge, be sure to pick an Nvidia card - it's one of the few games with PhysX that actually adds a lot to the game.

Demonstration of the PhysX in Mirrors Edge. It does look good, although unless he is a religious Mirrors Edge player PhysX doesn't offer a lot (At the moment that is.)

I don't think that video really demonstrates how much it adds to the immersion - theres some parts where the plasric sheeting, etc. is used, its just a few sections of it swaying in the breeze, moving around you if you move through it, etc. that adds quite a bit to the atmosphere of the game.

It's more subtle details that make a lot of difference.

Well, when I say subtle I mean they happen in real life just not in games so you don't fully notice them until they aren't there.
