Hi people!
So I'm back looking for more advice regarding monitors, firstly here is the setup currently used:-

VTX3D HD 7870 black boost edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-express graphics card
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 motherboard
Intel i5-3570k cpu
Housed in a zalman tower
But all running on an old logik 22inch TV

I have completely confused myself looking at reviews of all sorts of different monitors and even tv's trying to find the best one for my son. Here are the options I've looked at so far:-

Monitors:-

BenQ XL2720Z
Samsung SE590C Series S32E590C - LED monitor - 32"
Asus sonicmaster MX299Q

Tv's

Sony KDL40W705CBU
Samsung UE40J6300AKXXU

He has everything set up on his computer desk so is fairly close to the screen, this is why I wasn't to sure about the 40" Sony TV
I would love to get him something pretty impressive for his 18th bday so would you guys help me pick one plz? I get confused with everything pc so go gentle :D also reading stuff about graphics card capabilities and monitors?

Thanks for any help/guidance

What's your budget?

And while yes, it would be nice to buy him something impressive, His computer won't be able to run games at high resolutions without turning down settings in game.

What sort of games does he play? Maybe he doesn't game at all?

If he does play games and your budget allows it, would you consider a graphic card upgrade as well as monitor?

Hi thanks for your reply,
He is an avid gamer! He plays battlefield, gta, skyrim, cod, mgs, assassins creed and lots more that I just can't remember right now :D
For a monitor/TV I was thinking around £400-£500 and I sort of knew that his graphics card would need an upgrade for monitors which is why I looked at tv's to tell you the truth. If I upgraded his graphics card would I also need to update the motherboard?

Nope you don't need to upgrade his motherboard if you get a new graphics card for him.

The physical size of the TV/Monitor doesn't mean it will be harder to run. And it doesn't matter if it's a TV or monitor. It's the resolution, the higher the resolution the more GPU power you will need.

All the monitors and TV's that you have listed are the same resolution except for the Asus which is widescreen. It will be slightly harder to run than the others.

I am going to suggest this

and one of these monitors.

I know the first monitor with the graphics card is a bit over budget, but it would be a fantastic combo.

Ok so I've just looked at all of the above and I was wondering what the difference was between

acer XG270HUomidpx

And..............

acer XB270HAprz

barring price? The second one was another I was looking at already but reviews on acers are hit and miss so I missed that one off. Would that work with the new graphics card?

The difference between the two monitors you mentioned are that one is Freesync that works with AMD graphic cards and the XB270HAprz uses Gsync which works with Nvidia graphic cards.

Freesync and Gsync are new technology which makes games look smoother.

The monitor will work with the new graphics card. If you don't like Acer, I suggest you go with the AOC that I linked to. They aren't in stock yet though. And the Acer is on special offer this week.

If you want to go with a different monitor just make sure you buy a monitor that runs at 144hz. These monitors are so much better for gaming. BenQ's come highly recommened as gaming monitors.

I am sure your son will be impressed no matter what you buy as coming from a 22 inch TV to a proper gaming monitor will be a huge leap and adding in the video card will really bowl him over!! :)

You are really good at explaining (simplifying) thank you :)

So if I went ahead and bought the Acer XB270HAprz monitor with the graphics card you suggested would that be a real good combo? Or are there any other graphic cards I should look at first to go with that monitor?
I agree though anything would be a huge improvement,we basically put a gaming pic together for him with what we could afford at the time with the intention of upgrading components so I guess it's time :)

You need to buy the monitor that I linked to in my earlier post. You are buying an AMD graphics card. This monitor:-

The R9 390 (the card I suggested) is probably the best bang for buck card out there at the moment.

Yes, I think they will be an amazing combination. Even though it is slightly over budget.

Hey so I'm back, my husband has a mate at work that has offered him a practically brand new Asus MG279Q for a really cheap price is this a good monitor? Also does it still pair well with the Powercolor Radeon R9 390? Budget for a graphics card would be £250-£270 also looks like we need a better psu any thoughts?
Thank you ;)

I just bought the MG279Q monitor and an ASUS STRIX R9 390 DCIII video card.

They pair extremely well together.

My first MG279Q had a dead blue pixel. For the price of this monitor, that was unacceptable and I promptly exchanged it. The second MG279Q I received was perfect and I am keeping it! IPS glow is low and uniform across the entire screen.

I've tested all the way to 144 Hz and with the R9 390 with no issues.
I didn't buy the MG279Q for the FreeSync capability at the outset. I had simply wanted to replace my nVidia GTX 760 since it really wasn't suitable for 1440p and the R9 390 is better suited for 1440p.

Be aware that when using FreeSync that it's range is from 35-90 Hz on the MG279Q

I found that FreeSync really works well for my current favourite game: Witcher 3
I play at high settings with hairworks off at 1440p and fps is from 40-60 or so with my R9 390 and (not currently overclocking the GPU).

I just leave the windows refresh rate at 90Hz so that FreeSync works all the time.

I've owned many panels over the years and the MG279Q I received is the best 27" IPS monitor I've ever used. I use it for software development, video editing, and office productivity. IMO, it is one of the best all around monitors for all use cases.
