just not sure which one to go for a geforce GTX 260 or a ATI Radeon HD 4870
got max £140 to spend so what would be the best game card to go for will be using a wide screen tv and a 22inch monitor.
Cheers
Dean..

Don't be impatient, wait two days to see the specs of the 5800s, if the do come in at their $199 and $299 price points, you'll be able to grab yourself a 5850 for £140 which will blow away any current card in the same price range.

thanks, for your advice I can wait 2 weeks and increase to £160 so best to hang on for a bit and get the 5800 i'm off to the good old USA for to weeks
would I get a cheaper price there. for any of the 2 ati cards 4890 or 5800.
cheers
Dean

No way is the 5850 going to be £140

Why's that ?

Most people said the same thing about the 4800s, and I was saying they'd be $199 + VAT for the 4850s and $299 for the 4870s.

Look at what prices they were...

£120 and £175 (the current exchange rates made the difference).

could I find a ati 4890 cheaper in the States wail im there and just bring it home with me. dont have to pay the duty on it then what do you think?
HIS H489F1GP Radeon HD 4890 1024MB 256bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 Video Card with 850MHz Clock Speed and Memory CLK (Gbps): 3.9Gbps Memory Speed $213 "£130" cost over here is £158 is that worth getting as im going to be there anyhow.

initialy we will be fleeced but should be ok after a month depending on yields ;)

oh and yeah much cheeper to buy american. :)

btw the RRP should actually include american sales tax shouldnt it? which is like our vat but at 5% ish

http://www.vidaamericana.com/english/salestax.html

so when we say $***.** + VAT is that truely correct or do the americans add after?

hmm

The $199 and $299 is the retail price that ATi/AMD set them selves. It would be including sales tax at the national average I would expect.

Though as I've said, the prices we generally see here are US price at current exchange rate + VAT

If you go and look on a US store and compare the prices, you'll see most if not all are the same as the UK price minus VAT, I'd expect a little variation of a few percept, but nothing more than 3-4% difference.

Technically speaking, some people got their 4850s on release for sub US prices (discounting VAT).

When are you going and how long for?

You may possibly be there when 5800s go on sale.

this month for 2 weeks to florida sun sand lots of fishing and shooting but im sure i will find time to go shopping for a graphic card so i should be there when the 5800s go on sale, how long before OCUK get them? but if i wait untill i get home i will have £160 to spend.
The thing about buying over there is if theres a fault in the card its not going to be as easy as sending it back to ocuk and getting a replacement card with in a couple of days, Have just convinced myself to wait till I get home and buy one from OCuk they should have them by the end of September so I will get a 5800 card when they are in store.

Thanks all
Dean
How about a GTX 275 any good or the 5800s are better cards

5800s will be a lot better.

Nope, everything in the States is the quoted price plus tax, as it varies from state to state.

Therefore the $299 will, more realistically be somewhere between $315 and $350.

Probably best waiting. The 5800s could be expensive for the first few weeks. If you need a card now then the GTX 260 with Batman AA free for £110 isn't a bad idea. You get a free game and a (great) card you should be able to sell for £70++ in a few weeks :)
