Upgrade time is here again and I was looking to choose between a Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum vs MSI GeForce GTX 680 Power Edition.

But after checking the site today I noticed the new range of R9 gpu's and liked the look of the Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Toxic OC 3072MB but with knowing very little about the state of play of gfx cards these days I thought it would be best to ask for advice.

I should note I am upgrading from an MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 OC Twin FrozR III Power Edition 2048MB so hopefully any of the 3 possible cards gives an upgrade worthwhile for the money rather than a minimal one.

The Matrix platinum is a great card as is the CU top for £30 less. The MSI PE is also a great card and sits around the same price as the platinum but saves you a tenner.

For 1080P and purely for gaming, you can't go wrong with either of the CU top or PE 680, with PhysX coming with Nvidia and Mantle for the 7970 in Dice games from December.

The Platinum is a good choice if you are into benching.

The Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Toxic OC 3072MB should run a tiny bit faster out of the box but the Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum should overclock quite a bit more and win easy.

I like that pic.:D

I was in the exact same boat a coupe of weeks ago, my mate purchased a Sapphire 680 4gb card and I was going to do the same. . . I'm planning on running a triple monitor setup in the future so came on here and asked what people thought, I ended up getting the Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum after virtually everyone said it'd be better for a 3 screen setup :D

The Matrix also has more vram, but also the much higher memory bandwidth would mean much lesser performance hit if using settings like SuperSampling.

Seems like the Matrix card is the clear winner or the three. I take it the new R9 series cards don't match up to the performance of the 7970, or at least to the Matrix version?
