Neither would be a great upgrade imo, In fact a lot of peopl still choose the q6600 over the 9450.

What speed is your q6600 at - surely with water cooling its fast enough unless upgrading to an extreme quad which are currently over priced.

Could you add fans and a controller to get a bit more Mhz out of the system

at the moment my q6600 running at 3.4 with water cooling. was thinking maybe i get better overclock with faster cpu. temps on full load in low 50s.maybe i could push a bit more? not sure bit of a newbie at overclocking.

You can push your chip some more. You should be able to do 3.6 easy.

But as I said a lot of people still go for the q6600 when choosing a quad.
