which one

Options are 6870 or GTX470.

As your already using nVidia I'd stick with the GTX470, unless your overly worried about power use and heat output from the GPU.

This more or less sums it up.

470 atm would be your best bet, you could wait a few weeks and see if anymore price drops come along the line but I don't think they'll effect your options too much.

You should be looking at a HD 6870 on the ATI/AMD camp, rather than a 5850.

Otherwise it's whether you prefer Nvidia features like CUDA & PhysX or the new morphological anti-aliasing and Eyefinity that ATI have.

Also bear in mind the GTX 470, whilst marginally faster than the 6870, runs a lot hotter, noiser and uses way more power, but potentially overclocks better.

If you've got a decent brand, high wattage PSU and don't mind the extra heat or noise, then a 470 would be better, especially since you can get them for slightly cheaper than the 6870.

Personally I'd go for a 6870, but as I said above, it's dependent on what you want or need.

MLAA isn't the be all and end all... infact in a lot of games it looks quite blurry, tho in some games it works really well.

The GTX470 on the other hand can do proper 32x TRAA with decent framerates in most games... granted at a framerate hit but its decently playable fps in all but the most cutting edge games or silly high resolutions.

What about performance hit when enabling AA against the Radeons MLAA? Would that be an equaliser?

It's a none issue as MLAA will make any game look like crap. Your eyes would have to be sufficiently b0rked for it not to matter either way whether AA was enabled for you to even begin to consider using MLAA.
