On an old Celeron, 1ghz. Would it be noticably quicker set at 1.3ghz, with 256mb ram (2x128mb pc133), or 1ghz with 384mb ram (256pc100 +128pc133).

any ideas? or is it just gonna be slow either way?

The first option will be significantly quicker as both the CPU and memory (133 instead of 100) are running faster. More memory does not really make your PC run faster, it does however enable you to multi-task better.

More memory can make all the difference, as soon as you start paging no amount of CPU speed is going to make up for the grind that is paging. If you're running XP 256mb is enough to scrape through basic stuff, but not a lot else.

More Ram deffo, especially when you're at that sort of size, the extra 128mb will allow you more space for the OS and apps to sit without paging so heavily.
