ok just found an old laptop, feel free to laugh......a P233 with the whole 32mb!! i only wanna use it for a little internet surfing and msn/internet chat. my question is, given the spec, what would be the best operating system for it?

i'd guess something like Ubuntu would be ok, easy to install at least, but you'd most likely want to change the window manager, gnome on that system would be just nasty, Fluxbox/IceWM/other lightweight wm's would probably be far better and far more usable, although it's gonna be very slow whatever really...

i would also reccomend upgraing the momory, theres a very small chance youll get a gui running of that
Huh? This doesn't make any sense at all. It's a mid-90s era machine so it will be perfectly OK running mid-90s software. 32 MiB RAM isn't enough for Xgl or Windows XP but I clearly recall running Windows 95 on 4 MiB RAM.

DSL is my vote. Actually, I'm making a small web server out of a similarly spec'd laptop so I'm interested in your experiences and opinions.

Got a p233 laptop with 96MB! of ram back home, tried sticking DSL on that and it is about as responsive as a slug doped with morphine tbh :p

only thing I've got running fast on the thing is NT4, win 2000 runs on it albeit very very very slowly.

it will run linux in command line fine, im just saying, if you want a gui like gnome or KDE its may struggle, i have no doubts it could run 95/98/NT4

I can clearly recall running Windows 95 on a P233 + 16Mib RAM, which is why I'd avoid a repetition of the experience with every fibre of my being! ;) :)

Custom Slackware Install? That's what graces my machine with the aforementioned specs. It also handsomely coped with fluxbox for a while when it was press-ganged into being a temporary web-browser. Now it works it's pretty beige ass off as a test-bed for LAMP web-development, bless-it.
