Which option is best

I think ive got my mind set on crossfired 5770's anyway so il risk getting 'microstutter' and worry about it if it happens. Just a quick question, should i remove the drivers for my 3870 before installing the new cards or just install the new drivers over the top?
 
I'd go with a nice fresh start, uninstall the old ones and manually delete the old ati folders so you don't have any comflicting settings left over :)
 
Don't you just hate it when you buy your GFX card and pay one price get home install it then somehow up pops a website with a price lower than you paid and a faster GFX Grrrr.

This site is offering the 5770 1024 GB OC'd to 875mhz and 5.2Ghz!!! for £124 inclusive of TAX and delivery and 2 year warranty!!!! Its a Major E-tailer too.

Do I take my 5850 back and order these>?
 
Well, thought everythings was going well. Then I did some bench marking WTF! 15389 in 3DMARK06!!! I got 18234 with two 8800GTs OC'd.

After some searching Crossfire does not work on my motherboard as its an Nvidia 780i chipset. IM SO ..... OFF. Even the one 5770 is a poor score.

So a GTX 465 or 480?

So you originally had 2 x 5770 in your nvidia 780i motherboard, thinking they were running in crossfire? did you have the crossfire bridge connected?

I would have expected someone to at least learn the basics before heading down investing in a double card setup, lol. You have been very naughty indeed, by not doing your research!

Take note you were making your judgement based on the performance of 1x5770 earlier compared to the 5850.

Avoid the 465 imo, it's not worth the money for what you get out of it (compared to a 5850) - wait for what the gtx 460 will bring in early July for a mid range card and probably good for your current res - could be good for sli setup too (based on GF104 chip less power/heat). If you don't mind paying a lot and the power/heat then go for a 470 or 480 which will be easily good enough as single card solution for your res and possible future full hd tv res.

Considering the number of PCs Ive built I should have known better.

I assumed that PCI-e 2.0 was a standard and that it would not matter which card, ATi or Nvidia I had in the slots.

So Ive got two little used XFX 5770 1024GB (XXX Edition) for sale £270 inc 10cm Bridge.
 
Ugh nForce 780 :( if your going to buy 400 series SLI at this point don't waste money on 465 or 480 if you are going to buy get 1 or 2 GTX470.

Was that test when you thought you were benching crossfire 5770s?

also I thought it odd as you said you took the 5770s back to the store and swapped for a 5850.

You should be able to return them from where you bought them and get your money back.

So right now you're sitting with 2x5770 and 1x5850, all bought from the same store today? :)

as for nvidia sli and ati crossfire, it's all about the branded chipset on the motherboard which controls what the slots can do - and that brand needs the same brand of graphics card (and with the branded bridge connector). pci-e 2.0 is a universal standard yes for a slot, for normal single graphics card operation at specified speed/power.
 
Oh and also... don't use 3D Marks 06 for comparison... the results are relatively meaningless with current hardware configurations.

Sorry I got interrupted when writing about a size issue with the 5850 and didn't press submit. The 5850 is 9.5 inches long and whilst I could get it in the slot I wasn't able to slide the HDD's back into their slots and fix them. So I went back and got the 2 5770's as they were only 8.5 inches.

You should be able to return them from where you bought them and get your money back.

I found this out the hard way.

So its either a GTX465(£215 x 2) in sli or
single GTX470 (£293
or GTX480 (£432):confused:?

EDIT Hang on the 4 series are 10.5 inches?????

I would go 5850.

Eliminate any potential crossfire issues, it saves you £10 and you can upgrade with another 5850 in the future.

When I bought my 3870x2 back in April 2008, I quickly made the promise to my self to NEVER go crossfire or SLI again.

Just go single card, and upgrade from there.
 
5850 and overclock it to 5870 speeds and profit no way 5770 xfire is worth it now you'll need another 5850 in 12 months in which case with 5770 u ended you're upgrade path you would have to get a new card where the 5850 will be picked up for cheap then.
 
HD5850 if your a fan of trouble free gaming....oh wait PC gaming never is -_-

or HD5770 xfire both good options

I can't use the 5850 the card is too big for the case (X-Blade)

Also my motherboard won't run Crossfire as its a Nvidia 780i chipset. (Which I just found out DOH!)

The 2 8800GTs AMP Edt, I had running on it were awesome. I was going to get a GT 400 series card but they are massive at 10.5 inches!

So I am back to square one and hunting Ebay for a second hand Zotac 8800GT Amp whilst more saving goes on for a bigger case.

Least Ive learnt a lot, thanks for all the help.
