Which OS for new PC?

Hey everyone

Just upgraded an old family pc (AMD 64 3000+ 1.5GB RAM) running XP to a cheap but decent Intel E5200 with 2GB RAM as it runs really slowly.

Should I put back XP on it, Vista or Windows 7?

XP should run the fastest, but Vista should run easily quick enough - my own PC, an E4500 and 2GB RAM runs Vista perfectly, opening Chrome is instant, etc. Alternatively, Windows 7 RC1. Ive ran the Beta on my netbook and amazed at how fast it is, the downside is that the RC will expire in a year.

So what would you do?

Not got the parts yet, just ordered it, so will be installing next week.

See IMO Windows 7 is better than Vista, only downside is the one year expiry. XP is also perceived to be faster than Vista but Vista on my lower PC specs runs perfectly.

I gave up PC gaming ages ago for a 360. Its nice to be able to have a really quick PC with seemingly outdated parts!

If it's a family PC (as in not your own) I'd go for Vista. People forget that whilst W7 is looking like a great OS, it's still only a release candidate AND NOT THE FINISHED PRODUCT. It's build 7100 and we've already seen 7127 in the wild (although not a official release).

Do you really want to be installing a beta OS on your families PC, which you are then going to need to reinstall in 6-12 months time?

This, and its a bit more fire & forget i.e. malware proof.
