Hi all

I have just built my first PC !!! (just trying to decide on GFX card), but whilst making that decision, I need to sort out whether to go for XP or Vista.

1. XP Pro
2. Vista 32 bit
3. Vista 64 bit

Can anyone offer some advice in my decision? I am currently using XP on my old system so I dont mind either way, I do also know that it would be worthwhile adding some more memory as Vista is memory hungry !!

Thank you for reading this request :D

if i was you, XP 64 or Vista 64.

either way you go, your going to find problems running programs its just the way windows works. So if you intend to play old games some may not work with Vista.

But put it this way, im going with vista 64, simply because its the next step towards improvement and it take care of 4gb+ ram.
With regards to ram, i dont suggesting running vista with anything less than 4gb (others will disagree, but its becomes very slow, and hangs occur more often)

Ok with all my computers at the moment running vista 64:

office work PC : 1gb of ram
Game station 1: 2gb of ram
Game station 2: 4gb of ram

And all i can say is 1GB is completely unusable in vista - i can open one/two things (word and webpage) before the ram is maxed out.

2GB - its enough for a few more apps, but its really very slow compared to my 4gb machine.

All the machines have the same hardware - same drivers, same applications etc. the only thing is different is the ram amount.
I would highly recommend 4gb.

IFY im just about to buy another pc (see my thread) thats going to have 8gb because personally 4gb isnt enough for me.

Thanks h2009, would it be advisable in buying 2x1 sticks as I have that in my system now, or buy 2x2 sticks and put that with the 2 sticks in my system

Well, to be honest, to 'mix and match' ram it isnt a good idea your motherboard might throw some problems your way. I think you'd be safe buying 2x2 making sure they work by using memtest for a while, and if it does, try adding in your old sticks, run again if it fails adjust any settings you can think of that may help (voltage is a big on for 4gb+ ram) and see if you can fix it.

Just note that you may need to do a bios update.

edit: if i remember correctly theres a patch for vista that you may need to get it working. also search the forums for bios settings using 4gb ram - with my asus boards i had to disable a few things, and enable memory addressing.

Typical knew I should have bought 4x1 sticks at the same time, whilst on special :( !!!!
Thanks for the advice re 4gb will check this when I have sorted GFX ;)
