Which part of London to move to?

Hi,

I saw/read a similar thread from back in July, but it didnt really answer what I was looking for.

Basically I have a new job that is based right next to Heathrow airport, which means I need to move. (in the next couple of weeks)

I want the whole living in london experience so the nights out in central London etc,
but I have no idea which parts are the nice/affordable/with good links into the centre.

from looking at a map, The type of range I'm looking at are:

Isleworth, Feltham, Hounslow, Bedfont, Cranford, Norwood Green, Hayes
and any others that are within the tube Zone 5 or 6

I can go up to £800pcm in rent, and have a car.

In a perfect world I want:

- Close to tube station to get into town
- 20ish mins drive to work
- Has its own high street with some pubs etc
- Not a scary dump of a place
- Could afford a 1 bed flat on my own, with parking

Is this even possible?

thanks :)

I'd avoid all out of Isleworth, Feltham, Hounslow, Bedfont, Cranford, Norwood Green, or Hayes to be honest.

That part of 'West London' around the Hounslow area is not the nicest, I'd move somewhere everso slightly further out like Staines, West Drayton, Maidenhead etc. All of those towns are within budget and have excellent transport links to the airport and plenty of stuff to do in the evenings.

If money wasn't an object though, I'd say somewhere like Ealing or Richmond. :)

Richmond is nice and should be do-able on that budget. Plenty of places round there that are really nice. Kingston, Kew, Putney etc. Maybe Woking, short blat round the 25 to get to work.

Feltham is a dump and full of trouble when I lived over that way. It would need a lot of clearing up to make that place nice again. Hounslow not much better, Hayes the same and full of Brunel students.

I lived just beside Hayes for 6 months and couldn't wait to get out of it. It's a filthy hole.

I moved to Windsor. 20 mins from Heathrow down the M4, really nice place to live but the downside is that it's a bit pricey. £800 a month should get you a place here though.

As others said come and join me in Richmond :p

Hounslow, Feltham, Isleworth and Hayes aren't the nicest of place tbh. I don't know about the others.

Bare in mind that even if you are living on what is considered the outskirts of London (the higher tube zones) they do close down at night. So if you go on a night out, you are going to pay for quite an expensive taxi to get home. Where as if you are somewhere more central you could take a bus.

Come to Twickenham it's lovely here, much nicer than Hounslow etc. :p

Pretty handy for the airport (Are you based in Heathrow itself or near it?)
We have a nightbus for when you go out and get hammered.
It's just over 20 minutes to Waterloo on the train.
It doesn't feel like London, lots of greenery around.

I'm right by the A316 as well, which turns into the M3 so it's dead easy to get out into the country if you so wish.

I'm currently paying £825pcm for an unfurnished 1 bed place on a nice road with parking to give you an idea of prices.

Feltham is a dump and full of trouble when I lived over that way. It would need a lot of clearing up to make that place nice again.

They're trying their best at the minute. Loads of new stuff going up around there, unfortunately they haven't removed all of the old residents so it's still a bit of a dive right now.

thanks for the info guys!

looks like I was looking in the wrong places!

I was worried about how long it would take to commute if I went that far east from the office (it basically overlooks the runway!)

So would the journey to work not be that bad from Richmond/Twickenham/Egham
then? 20/30 minutes?

(I will be on flexy time, so leaving home at 9am is perfectly possible)

I used to work near Staines and I could do the trip from Twickenham in 15 minutes on a good day.
Heathrow I reckon you could easily do in 20-30 mins, getting to Heathrow is fine it's the bit when you get inside the airport that's a nightmare. It sounds like you won't be doing that bit though.

Just to say thanks again for all the advice guys

I now have a great flat in Twickenham, and have managed to survive the 1st week at new job, after trying 3 slightly different routes, seems I can get to bath road (near HR) in about 35-40 mins which is fine

loving it so far :-D

Glad to see you made the right decision :D

The A316 is usually pretty free flowing, even during busy times so I guess its the cut across Hounslow/Feltham that takes the time. I'd have thought going up Hospital Bridge Road and then down the A315 to the A312 might not be a bad option if you've tried that so far?

Whereabouts are you in Twickers anyway? I'm just on London Road between the junction for the station and the A316, we should get together a few local members for a beer sometime.
