Which phone... what to do

OK, I currently have a HTC Magic, and I am quite frankly bored with it. I've rooted it and tried different ROM's but it's just not quick enough or snappy enough for me, some basic functions are a PITA and the lack of a decent Facebook app is a massive let down for me. Problem is, I'm tied with it till my upgrade is due, which is not till November. I can pay my Contract off for about £250 and be left with the Magic though. I imagine I could get £150 for my phone on eBay so not too much left to settle.

Initially I was going to wait till the new iPhone comes out in the Summer, along with any other new Smart phones due out, pay my contract off and get that, or also see what else is about come that time. However a lad in work has got the HD2 and it does look very impressive, and has a good camera which I have missed on my Magic (previous N95 and N95 user).

So I looked around and I can get the HD2 for free on a £40 PCM contract, 600 minutes, unlimited texts and mobile data with Vodafone through Dialaphone. Or, I can pay an extra £5 a month, pay £30 for the phone and have it on a 12 month contract which I would favour I think.

So if you were in my position, what would you do? Keep a phone that you're not particularly happy, or just pay a bit of money and get the HD2 on a 12 month contract, or wait about?

I am also interested in hearing from people's experiences with the Magic who now have a HD2 or an iPhone, or know people who've made comments.

Cheers.

Never heard of it till now mate, hence me posting this. I'll look at that as well.

All I want is a phone that works, and works well. I don't want to have to root it, Jailbreak it or anything else. I want to turn it on, not have it crash, use it as normal and enjoy using it.

I may be misinformed, but the 3GS manages this quite well from speaking with owners. Only let doen for me personally is the low resolution and the poor camera.

What's the AMOLED touch screen? Is that the same as the Magic and 3GS? I don't like the pen type ones such as the original HD.

The iphone 3GS is a good phone...doesnt crash as such...only drawback to it is that your locked down apps wise by Apple and customisation ie themes and wallpapers is a no go unless you jailbreak it.

The screen on the iphone 3GS isnt that bad actually...its not as high res as say the HD2 or other phones out there.

AMOLED touchscreen from what i understand is just a higher res screen i think but im sure someone will come along and explain it better....dont think many phones have AMOLED touchscreens...the magic definitely doesnt have it and neither does the 3GS.

Its very similar to the Nexus 1 google phone, but with a few extra features such as HD recording, but comes with the HTC Sense UI for android.

I was in two minds whether to plump for the HD2, it seemed abit too big and wasnt sure id get on with it, but after having it almost a week I love it, only downside is the built in keyboard which can be cumbersome occasionally, but i've just installed swype which is great.

Its very fast with almost instant switching between programs, it much better laid out than previous WM devices and the audio playback is much better than my ipod touch which is up for sale as now superfulous.

My iphone is ace. I love it so far, I like being able to just have music playing while checking emails / checking the news or talking on facebook / sending a text. I don't understand why you'd need more then one app open at a time to be honest.

It's quick, looks nice, the range of applications available are fantastic. I've not really noticed the "low resolution" the camera isn't great, but the iphone is a phone ;)

I take the odd picture of something cool, but buy a camera if you're in to taking photo's :p

Browsing the net is really enjoyable, as is just using the phone. Feels clean and fresh if that makes any sense.

Only downside I've found so far is that letting a friend play on Rock Band raped my battery.

AMOLED uses OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, meaning it's far superior to existing LED. It's far clearer, far more efficient and the picture quality is amazing.

Cheers for the replies. The more I read about the HD2, the more I am put off. I think I'll see what the new iPhone has to offer.
