Which plugs do I use?

Being dense here....
Do I use one socket or both at the same time? That is both the 6 pin and 8 pin sockets on the gpu together to supply the gpu with power?

My psu seems to accommodate connection without the adapter supplied with the gpu.

In effect I have to take 2 cables from the psu to the gpu.
Cable 1 connects to the 6 pin gpu socket.
Cable 2 connects to the 8 pin gpu socket via a 6+2 pin pci-e plug.
