Which processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Quad

Hi...

I'm in the process of buying a new PC, probably one from right here at OCUK.

I'm just not sure which processor to go for. Either an Intel Core 2 Duo (like on the Titan Spirit GT system) or an AMD Phenom X4 Quad Core (on the Titan Ultimate GT system)... though I might go for one of the custom built PCs from the PC Builder range.

I'm guessing I'll get more from the Quad Core as I'll be using this PC mostly for 3D and graphics apps like ZBrush 3, 3D Studio max and Photoshop CS. SO I'm not too sure if there is any real benefite of the AMD Quad Core over the Intel Duo?

Also I was contemplating making the move to XP 64 bit for this new system - I'm hoping to use 4GB of Ram or more. Would this be a good idea?

At the moment I've got an AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, and was wondering if it would be of any benefit to go the Intel route this time around, or would either be okay?

Anyway. Any help or other suggestions (Intel Quad?)would be great.

Thanks.

are we talking about a prebuilt or build your own from OCUK?

are you overclocking?

any gaming ?

either way give us a budget, and we'll help you get a system that suits your needs

budget and needs would be good, but I'd steer you towards an Intel quad of some variety. Intel are much better at the moment in terms of performance and pricing

Hi.

It'll be pre built - I don't feel up to the hassle of building my own again. I'm looking to spend in the area of £500-£700.

I'm not fussed about games (though I wouldn't count 'em out). Mostly graphic stuff.

Thanks.

I'd personally go Quad if your doing that kind of work, as you should see a nice improvement from your 3800+. I'd go for the Q6600, unless you can pay the extra for the 45nm newer revisions.

Have you tried overclocking your 3800+? Mine is currently at 2.75Ghz and is by no means slow doing most stuff. It just might help you to wait a while before upgrading to see how prices may drop with new hardware in the next few months.

Thanks all... Me thinks I'll go Intel Quad :D

I think I am goin to go with this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/syscon_int.php?prodid=FS-062-OK

With the folloing bits 'n pieces:

Antec P182 Gaming Case
- Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

- OCZ 4GB DDR2 PC2-6400 (2x2GB)

- Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 (I'm not sure If I should try and ATI here as I've heard that the 8800's are abit flaky )

- 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB 7200RPM SATA-II 32MB Cache HDD

- OS: They don't seem to have the 64bit version listed here though I can buy it seperately I guess.

- Dell Ultrasharp 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor (Is this the proper 2408WFP or the budget E248WFP... ah hangon it says "Ultrasharp"... DOH!!! :p)

What do yoy think?

Thanks again.

Me too!

Pity there's no option for an ATi 4850 in that spec. I'd give the shop a call and see if you can upgrade to that...

I tried phoning them on Friday about a different case, one that wasn't listed but still one that they sell elsewhere on the site (this was on a different range - I think the Performace Titan Ultimate GT series or something). The girl I spoke to said "no"... and didn't seem at all friendly... she also sounded like she'd just woken up ... to say the least I wasn't at all impressed... anyway....
